I have a query - basically when I get hungry, I get really tetchy. For example, if I have breakfast and don't eat until lunch (3-4 hours later) at about the 2 and a half hour mark I'll get a little edgy. If I am self-aware enough I'll recognise it and eat something - but if I don't I will get narky to the point where I can't really concentrate and think straight and eventually I'll get mardy and angry and argumentative.

I've had a blood test recently (for my cholestrol level - done after having not eaten for 12 hours as you should) and this didn't throw anything up like diabetes or anything.

My conclusion has always been that "my blood-sugar level" is low - so I eat and I feel better fairly quickly.

My question is - is this normal - is it just me?

Replies will be in an hour after I've had my lunch as I've not eaten since 8 and I'm a little tetchy already....

Diabetes is when you have an insulin deficiency, which if not controlled leads to high blood sugar levels.

Diabetes can cause low and high blood sugar levels.....its a complex system mainly controlled by the secretion of insulin into our system.

http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/diseases/facts/diabetes...

FYI I thought I was diabetic as when I´m hungry I get poor concentration....but after tests the doc told me that my body is just sensitive to slightly lower sugar levels (we all go up and down during the day).

I think most ppl on here will admit to nto feeling 100% when they are hungry....our bodies need fuel to operate properly.

Cheers

I get very grumpy when I'm hungry, as soon as I eat I can feel my mood improve.

The 'tetchiness' may possibly relate to hypoglycaemic syndrome through prediabetic insulin resistance; the brain requires sufficient energy to produce serotonin ('feel-good' neurotransmitters). Without adequate sugar/energy levels the brain will release 'stress' hormones (such as adrenaline) that will compound the feeling st/grumpy.
However, I'd imagine they've been investigating you for this with a glucose tolerance test. In your case it's hopefully just your relatively low sugar levels causing a mild manifestation of this syndrome.

It's normal for your levels to fluctuate from day to day depending on what you've eaten. Do a Google search on 'slow release carbs' to see how you can avoid the mid morning dip.

Enter your details on this site and they'll send you a free meter which is the same kind that Diabetics use to check their levels.

I get grumpy if I get very hungry. After eating I can feel my rage against the world start to diminish almost immediately.
FiL tells me it's normal and that it's just a lack of blood sugar. (He's a consultant specialising in endocrinology and diabetes.)

Worth looking into the possibility of food intolerance. I have celiac disease and can't eat most of the good old slow release carb stuff. I get just the same symptoms you describe. If you can eat it porridge is brill!
