OK, so imagine Tesco is a massive company that is vital to this country (not so hard to do). Now imagine they were own by one private person.
If this person thought the current VAT reduction by the Govt was a load of b
ks and decided he wouldn't decreases prices (i.e just maintain prices and make extra profit).
Lets imagine said person also takes out lots of press adverts to tell us exactly what he thinks of the VAT reduction (negative opinion obviously)... this could then lead to other big shops following suit
In this scenario woudl you say it was
a) Good that a company was standing up to make a point if it thought soemthign was pointless - and said company was large enough to possibly sway all other major retailers (and likely smaller retailers) - to make the whoel VAT reduction pointless and force the Govt to do something else
b) Bad.. business shouldn't try to interfere with politics like that and they should do what they are told. If a business managed to pull that off then it has gotten way to big/powerful

Of course its bad. From a consumers point of view anyway. Mr Tesco buys things as 15% VAT, gets an extra 2.5% off and we pay the same as usual, and we as a country end up getting ourselves into a massive amount of debt through bad policy and the possibility of any slight benefit is being eaten away by some international who'll probably take the money out of the country's economy anyway. That, and I will just go to the other large retailers who are charging less.
(I don't care how tin hat and gloomy that sounds, it's raining outside.)
