Is there a Tomcat virus out there?
Discussion
Two of our PCs running the Tomcat server under XP Pro suddenly both started playing up this morning. Both seem to grab 500 to 900 Mb of memory for Tomcat. We commented out all our contexts and the problem still happens!!!!
We have other PC's that are running Tomcat OK today.
There have been no updates made to either machine for a while and they have both been behaving themselves. The two PCs are not on the same LAN, but are VPNd together part-time.
Interesting symtom is that Task Manager shows a massive Page File usage but does not list any applications using very much memory at all. When Tomcat is killed the Page File usage drops dramatically down to 'normal' levels; hence the assumption is that it is Tomcat causing the trouble.
I've never heard of a virus that attacks Tomcat. What else could it be ?

The big PC actually ran out of disc space and because somebody accidentally configured the swap space onto the same disc as the file storage, it keeled over. This is going to be sorted out....
The laptop had some poorly configured tuning parameters (initial memory sizes) that took the VM usage pretty high. What has tipped the VM over the edge is still a mystery because there is no way even half the VM should be used normally and the poor initial allocations pushed it up to about 75%. We still haven't identified what or why is using all the extra memory.
At least we now feel a lot happier now we know that the two machines going down is coincidence and it is not a malicious attack!
