My 4 year old Toshiba DVD player is great, but has no CDR, VCD or MP3 support.

After a little web research the best bet appears to be the Cambridge Audio DVD57.

Any comments on this player or suggestions for some alternatives??

A good website to check for format playback on players is www.dvdrhelp.com. (aka - www.vcdhelp.com)

www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdplayers

As players go I'd recommend the Arcam DV89, not cheap but the best DVD Video quality you'll ever see. Its also a DVD Audio player.

if you want to play the other formats mentioned (which are lower quality than DVD) why not get a lower quality player for just those formats? The Pacific that you can get from Asda for £45 hasn't refused to play any disc I've thrown at it - VCD, SVCD, MP3, CD-R, CD-RW - but I haven't tried it's multi-region capability yet.
