Horrible, horrible accident just happened in the IRL at Texas - Thomas Schetkter and Kenny Brack touched, and Brack just took off and went straight into the catch fencing, destroying the car. I know it's not nice to speculate, but it looked awful.

They've actually just shown some replays, which may be a good sign - the main cell of the car looks like it has stayed in one piece, but it was a truely horrendous crash - conjoured up memories of the accident that befell Jeff Krosnoff.

Fingers crossed he's ok.

Latest report suggests Brack is conscious and stable, which frankly, having seen the replays again, is remarkable.

I've read on another site that he is in a serious, not critical condition, and been airlifted to level 1 trauma center at Parkland Memorial in Dallas.

Awake and alert... ESPN saying he has multiple fractures.

The good news is that he's alive.

I'm amazed he survived that. Testimony to the strength of the car (G-Force?). As soon as it happened I got that horrid sinking feeling I had when Greg Moore crashed. Just couldn't believe he'd get out of it alive. To escape (if that's the right word) with multiple fractures is amazing.

I've only just now seen it - he's certainly lucky to have survived.

Lucky boy.....

Crash.net are reporting he's "awake and talking" in hospital, but still listed as "serious".

Fingers crossed the fractures aren't severe enough to end his racing career - if indeed he'd even want to get back in a racing car after that.

Wonder if this will raise doubts over using TMS in the future, as it's not the first massive crash to happen there during an IRL race.

Just watched the video again.....amazed how anyone could've survived that. Absolutely amazed. Think the one saving grace was the car seemed to go into the fence floor first. Were it the other way up the results don't bear thinking about.

Dont forget who can 2nd in that race and won the championship.

SCOTT DIXON!!!!! Great effort, he'd have to be the best NZ driver at the mo. Hopefully this will lead onto an F1 drive for him.

Hope Brack gets well soon!

Watched the crash on BBC news this morning - huge or what?

Drivers moan when the authorities start introducing new safety measures and the like but you have to say it's more than worth it when you see an accident like that.

Let's hope he makes a full recovery!

There is a huge element of luck in these accidents - Mario Andretti's crash at Indianapolis this yaer would have been fatal if he landed the wrong way up.

Remember watching Greg Moore's accident when I worked for Reynard, another driver had exactly the same off a few laps previously and walked away, Greg broke his neck . . .

IRL seems to have quite a few serious injuries recently this season . . and not to happy about the amount of accidents Schekter is involved in . .

I was waiting for him and Hornish to clash at some point during that race.

This race has been cancelled a number of times as the cars are just too fast for the circuit, maybe somebody should tell em what the peddle in the middle is for , cancelled last year if i remember as the air restrictors were too big and they wanted smaller ones fitted to slow em down a tad !!

I know the CART race at TMS was cancelled, not sure if the IRL race there ever was.

That said, TMS has witnessed some enormous crashes during IRL races, so you do wonder about the suitability of it as a venue.

You, Eddie Cheever and all the rest of IRL it would seem. Although in fairness, from watching the video I don't think he can be blamed for the Brack crash, and I seem to recall a few of his accidents have been due to engine/mechanical failure. Remember when he took Cheever out though...whoops.

I'm amazed Hornish hasn't crashed more to be honest, considering his penchant for running high up the track - doesn't leave much margin for error in the event of being "squeezed".

It was CART - wasn't the g-force making the drivers dizzy after a few laps?

I love watching the IRL, as it has produced some awesome racing (purists might disagree), but there does seem to be a worrying acceptance that huge accidents will happen, and as a series it's had a disturbing number of serious injury crashes in a short space of time.

Yep/Kind of, they were holding there breath going in, on and the exit of the corners so they were only breathing on the straights which at 200+ MPH was not very long potential for blackouts was quite high on the 1.5 mile long Oval track...

High banking - that's why they don't race at Daytona!

To think - qualifying at Fontana in 1997 was at over 240mph average!! Less banking . . .
