My old XJ400 used to rev to 14,000rpm and I think some of the sportier 400cc bikes revved to about 16,000rpm.

And 250cc even higher. 18.5 for the CBR250
And the ZXR was even higher at 20k(according to Wikipedia)

Define road car.

The Caparo goes to about 10500 I think. Not really that mainstream though!!

Caparo is fine - it is a road legal std production model.

What about the Merc 190 2.3 Evo - didnt that rev to 11,500rpm?? And how about any of the other DTM cars of that era with massive RPM?

Ive heard of N/A rotarys pusing near 20k on the rev range, and damn do they sound beasty biggrin

Ive also seen a video of some big yank firm testing a v8 to something silly like 22k o.0 sounding mental!

My old mk1 MR2 was redlined at about 8750 rpm, so that should surely be beaten now. Civic type R maybe?

The road versions certainly didn't.

The bottom end was capable of revving to that speed in road going trim. Alas the cars were limited to just a smidge over 7000 RPM as I recall.

Nissan GTR 400R was supposedly designed to rev to 10,000...

Old Honda S600 and S800 had 9,000 rpm redlines.

I know someone who claimed through witchcraft and electrickery had made his Mi16 rev to 13,000. It didn't last long, but went like the clappers by all accounts.

Probably fibbers though.

Technically I guess it would be the Chrysler Turbine Car. They turned at 45,700 rpm. There were 55 built in 1963 to test the viablility of turbine powered automobiles. I'm not sure if you'd consider that a production car or not.
