Hi All,

I'm posting for a friend of mine (not a PHer) who is currently having problems with his 1985 UR quattro. Its on a B reg and is one of the first to be in the face lift (smoked lenses etc...)

He has spent a great deal of time and money on the car although has develloped a problem which we cannot work out, and nor can a few garages including Quattro Corner specialist garage.

The problem is that although the car drives A1, when under heavy accelleration, there is a 'Metallic' grinding noise from what we assume is the transmission/diff.

If you were deaf, you wouldnt know that there was any problem with the car as it does not slip, crunch...anything abnormal at all.

Does this sound like a problem which someone else has encountered?

Is there a part in the drive train (or maybe a mount) which has a tendenancy to break?

I look forward to seeing your thoughts,

Matt-Man (and Richard!)

I expect if its been subjected to a few garages and Quattro Corner then they been through all the scenaio's. The only thing that i can think of which happened to my MB quattro, was an exhaust hanger had snapped and the exhaust would touch the drive shaft, where it passes over it near the diff, under heavy accelleration. This used to make a horrendous grinding/screech when it happened.

Could be the Torsen, that may be subjected to abuse if you are giving it too much work to do. What advice did the "garages" give to you?

Hi phumy, thanks for your post.

The strange thing is that the garages all said that they couldnt find a fault. When it went to Quattro Corner, we had thought it was going to be the exhaust touching (it sounded like when the drive shafts used to touch the rear pipe on my wedge) as the car was lowered.

The suspension, full shocks and springs, have since been uprated and fitted by QC and drove the car to find 'no fault'. I find this hard to understand as anyone can floor it in a straight line and hear the problem!

When cruizing, it doesnt make any noises, even if driven through dips in the road so i am considering that it is not the exhaust...

Sounds like the prop centre bearing.
Common fail, they are all going due to age.

I would have thought that Dialynx would have found the problem.

You will find there is a grease nipple on the centre bearing, which is something you can do your self, you will need a torch and to roll the propshaft around to get the correct angle. I seem to remember that the official service manual for the ur states this needs greasing on a regular basis. Might save you a few bob if you DIY.

I am another one to highly recommend Roger Galvin at the "quattro workshop", near Lutterworth, J20 of M1. I honestly don't believe that anyone knows as much about quattros anymore as he does, even Audi UK will ring him. As for Dialynx, I haven't used them but I have seen their bespoke replacement exhaust manifolds and I wouldn't have one on my car.

Roger is your man. He has looked after my MB for 10 years and I will not take it anywhere else.
