I've always been quite skinny (I prefer athletic)... ok like a bean pole, I'm over 6ft and weigh 11 1/2 stone.

I now really want to get some bulk on me, not like a lager beer belly type bulk but more on my shoulders, arms and legs.

I know that the obvious thing to do would be go to a gym, but I work all over the place and live in the arse end of no where so the nearest gym is a 40 minute round trip, so thats not really an option after a 12 hour day if I want to do it on a regular basis.

I was thinking about getting one of those home gym things that I can do half to an hour a every other day.

Does any one have any recommendations on which one to get/ things too look for, I don't want to spend a fortune < £300 would be perfect.

Also any advice on frequency of excerciseetc and are there any tips on diet etc to aid my cause

Thanks in advance

I'm about 5'11" and weigh about 8 stone. So it might be an idea to listen to some of this advice.

my advise would be to get free weights instead. But diet will be as important, if not more important than the exercise, lots of protein etc.

Have a look at this:

www.rosstraining.com

Lots of ideas from Ross on how to get fighting fit (his training philosophy is based on his boxing/fighting background and experience) and I can vouch for the fact that his workouts are effective and can take as little as 20 mins to complete whilst leaving you shaking like a stting dog.

Ross has a book called 'Never Gymless' which I admit I haven't read, but the basic premise is that you can train at home with the most basic of equipment.

If you haven't trained before you'll see gains almost immediately. However, the most important factor is diet. Have a search on here for the other threads that have come up in the recent past.

For something you can do all the time, go for a swim once, maybe twice a week, nothing too strenuous (if thats spelt correctly) just tread water for a half hour or so and you'll notice a change in your upper body physique within a month if you really take to it.
I went on holiday for a week and came back with a noticeable difference in my chest and arms, just from being in the pool for half hour or so a day

( also it helps if you eat like a man possessed, obviously if you eat as much as you do normally your not going to gain weight as your body is taking in as much as it needs, eat more and its got to go somewhere...)

I am not UNhappy with the way I am just fancy adding some bulk and a bit of strength, would also be nice to wear a watch without it looking like I have a clock strapped to my wrist!

Live on good quality steak and cheese and ham omelettes, then watch the pounds pile on.

Just putting on weight in general will make quite a difference compared to just going for muscle gain.

Dead lifts shoudl sort out the areas you mention. And try and eat your bodyweight (in lbs) in grams of protein.

So for instance I weigh 200 pounds - can of tuna - 25g of protein - I would need 8.

Obviously mix it up but when you start to get close to this things start to happen.

If you're normally fairly dormant, then likely to be due to losing a bit of fat IMO. A lot easier to lose fat than put on muscle.

If you want to, get some free weights and aim for various upper body exercises at 6-8 reps, 3 or so times. You need to (be careful) lift the most you possibly can at the reps you're doing. Workout for 45mins-1hour but no more. You will feel sore for a few days afterwards, but this is good and if you alter your workout every 2/3 weeks, you will continue to ache the next day.

Work the same body part no more than twice a week.

Eat a protein shake immediately after. Also important to eat some carbohydrates immediately after as this is the time your body will break down muscle for energy. By eating some carbs, you're providing a quick easy alternative energy source.

Although this sounds like a joke, he is right. I am 6'3 and was stuck at 12 stone for ages, despite going to the gym a few times a week and training pretty hard. Over the last year i have put on 2 stone so am now at 14 stone. All this has been due to eating a lot, and I don't mean chomping down a whole pack of biscuits. Eat a decent breakfast and plenty of protien rich foods throughout the day.

Although the OP mentions he can't go to the gym, there are plenty of bodyweight exercises you can do at home which will help bulk up as well as a good diet.

Invest in some free weights and then check that website out for exercise ideas.

Diet is also very important! More protein is good for building muscle.

In 8 weeks you can do quite a lot. In 16 weeks you can do really loads. You tend to not notice yourself though, since you see yourself every day.
