Career advice - Consultancy

Having a strong financial and retail background I feel I could add value by form of consultancy, if not now definately in the not too distant future.

My question is how do you go about getting into this line of work? Is it a case of start off on your own and prospect likely companies, or is it usually a case of wait for someone to ask?

If you sit around and wait for someone to ask you to work, it could be a very long wait. It would make more sense to actively look work work within a company already providing the services you talk about, get enough experience and contact and then think about going alone
