As much as I hate to bore most of you with this question, I know many of you have driven (drive) multiple non-sports cars as well. I'd like to tap into that knowledge. Anyway, She Who Decides needs a new car. She's had a Focus for 3 years and was happy with that but with increasing numbers of kids' friends, grandparents and what not has now set her mind on a MPV. I can't really argue because she did not bitterly complain when I bought my Cerb (quite likes it in fact), so a MPV it will have to be. I know they're all pig-ugly, but putting myself beyond that, a Vauxhall Zafira and a Honda Stream seem to my naive eye the best options as they seem not too unwieldy in traffic, behave - apparently - more or less like stationwagons (is that proper UK verbiage) and not like buses, and have these nifty completely-fold-away 3rd row of seats instead of heavy and often paint-scratching take-out seats.
This will be the only car of the family (except again for my Cerb but that resides in the UK most of the time, the MPV will be in Holland) and I'll have to drive it in the weekends.

I'd appreciate any constructive comment, or other sensible suggestions for 6-7 people (4 adults+2 kids or so). Driving impressions would be most heplful. Funny comments (but only really funny ones) are welcome as well but there are other discussions on most ugly cars etc.

Excellent, but I bet the missus couldn't park that at the local tesco's (or dutch equivalent) - a bit challenged on the turning circle front methinks. Me, I'd have this one every time!

Personally I would squash everyone in a used audi A8 / S8 rather than a new van. But if you really need the extra space then the vw / ford sharon vr6 2.8 is the best option. A load of my mates have hired all the vans when travelling 100's of miles to wales, scotland etc for climbing with loads of gear. The vw / ford is by far the most comfortable due to the size and decent seats. It still has a boot left when all the seats are used too. Some french ones are crap as the rear seats are in the boot area, leaving no room for stuff. This is the only van everyone was happy to hire again after all the others.

Sadly they took out the 2nd and 3rd row of seats to make place for the engine. So no space for sprogs & granny. And there was only 1 made, I think. And I don't want my wife to have a faster car than me. If it hadn't been for this I'd been off to the renault dealer right now.

Mmertens,

Having just bought a Vauxhall Zafira and it has astonded me. It's only the 1.8 16V but it really does go! (Honest). Having had it for a couple of weeks I used it to go up to Aylesbury (100miles). To be honest I could not have got there any quicker than in my Lotus. I averaged about 100mph without stressing it, and it can take corners pretty well (for a van). There is a huge amount of space, especially in the boot, and it will seat 7 people easily.

OK, so you have to use a reasonable amount of lock to change direction and it has a Vauxhall badge on the front, but it really is good fun to drive.

I can only assume the GSi to be even better, so get down to a dealership and try one out!

Thanks Adeewuff. Roadrunner, read Adeewuffs post attentively - he thinks the Zafira could not be quicker than the Lotus which seems a fair point... (although he might mean the opposite ) An average of 100 mph is not bad anyway - plod would be happy to catch you in either car...

We managed 118 flat out in a Renault espace 2.0 with 5 up, plus luggage. Great deal of patience required though! M6 at around 4am.

ML Mercedes are a good choice as a alternative to an MPV can seat 7 people and really are great to drive given the raised driving position, they have all the toys you could want as well

My wife loves hers and doesn't want to change it for the Porsche Cheyenne that I have on order

ML is really worth a look and prices are now down to £20k ish for a S or T reg.
