Is anyone else having issues with their Xbox360 since the last Xbox Live Update? Since downloading the update at the weekend I've had issues with the main disc drive just stopping or failing to read any disc's. I was just wondering if any fellow PH'ers have had similar issues?

dude, its the start of the 3 lights of death, two of mates mates who live in the same house actually had this on theirs within months of each other, one sent it away to be repaired once it had happend(3 lights of death) and the other mate's warranty had ran out. I think the warranty was extended to 3 years from tweo to sort out the problems. think you need the proof of purchse though, but not sure...

could be a time to ahem ebay it!!! sold as seen, ahem!!! not that I would ever condone this behaviour.....

8 Weeks to turn round a 360 repair? ouch.

Also do you know if you have to pay for the repairs at all?

I believe not under warranty, and I also believe it is cheapeer to buy consol only from somwhere else if you have to pay for the fix themselves.... but I could be wrong....mine started doing it last year (I bought it second hand)but didnt use it for ages and it has rarely it since, but my mate wants to buy it from me, might off load it to him.... biggrin

If it's run out of warranty then just get it fixed by an independent electrician. IIRC it's to do with the solder on the PCB's overheating and degrading. Proper resoldering can cure it

How old is your box? I wouldnt imagine the update did anything and is merely a coincidence. disc drives fail, it happens, as with any high speed rotating device.

Completely unrelated to 3 red lights (RROD).

For the above response, RROD generally happens because of the board flexing due to heat and the BGA balls on the GPU become disconnected. Generally only an issue on older boxes as for quite some time now the has been a 2nd heatsink w/heatpipe on the GPU helping keeping temps down. The newest of boxes have 65nm technology which reduces heat and powe consumtion even more

Yep unrelated red lights of death defo. In fairness Msoft are pretty fair over this (had two fixed under the scheme and yes I am sad) smile

when it comes back from being fixed (takes about 8 weeks) invest in a cooling fan (you can get them in Game) the thinking is its due to the chip overheating. smile HTH

Cheers
The cooling fans make the problem worse, don't fit them. The new chipset (Zypher) boards fix this problem, a fan will only mess up the airflow.

you mean zephyr, and they are v2 boards, we are now up to v4/v5 jasper and valhalla, i beleive everything since v3/v3.1 (falcon/opus) has the 2nd heatsink.

but you are correct, the external cooling fans are useless.

It's about 2 years old now and has seen a lot of use so I guess I cannot complain too much that it's failed now. I wasn't sure if the update was related just you know a coincidence that it worked the night before the update but then didn't work afterwards.

ahh is that right???

thats interesting... it must be sheer coincidence that the same thing happend to my mates ie the not reading the disk correctly(needs a clean or something like that) and restarting the game/dvd and then the red lights of death....

either way I might get rid of mine, seems to be the way foward, I never go online as BT yahoo BB doesnt seem to like my xbox... ahem to$$ers

i said it was unlikely, of course it could be a bug or something, does it read movies, audio cd's?

Mine must have known the update was coming, because it failed (RROD) the day before the update!

While on the topic of 360 failures, anybody ever had a problem with the xbox ruining a disk and putting a huge scratched circle around the whole thing? Its now unplayable and was curious if microsoft will do any exchanges for a new disk that will work.

Yup, if you move the Xbox when a game is in it, you will get 'the ring'.

They would not sort it for me gratis, but when I called, they offered that I could send the game and a tenner to them and they would send me a new copy frown

Wrap your 360 in a couple of towels (nice and warm) and leave it running for 'a while' to induce the RROD.

balls. Must refrain from knocking my 360 over while pissed.

Ill give customer service a call and see if they can sort me.
