to become a Lord and get a highly paid goverment job, firstly you need the poloroids of Tony and Gordon shagging each other senseless.

This is exactly the problem with removing the majority of Hereditary Peers and replacing them with Life Peers.

We now have entirely the wrong sort in the Upper House.

Yep:

House of Commons: Labour cronies
Spoeaker of House of Commons: Labour crony
House of Lords: Labour cronies

Just the way Tony wanted it.

The real answer to the House of Lord is to turn it into an Elected 2nd Chamber.

Then rather than political appointees and Toffs we would the people in there that the people choose.

What is the point of having TWO elected chambers (others than doubling costs of course)? I'd suggest that Britain did a sight better with the Commons/Lords system of checks and balances than it's doing now.

I'll agree that 'political appointees' are not a good idea, but what do you mean by 'Toffs'? I suspect you mean wealthy people with a good education and background. I don't have a problem living in a country run by people who went to good schools, and it doesn't bother me how rich they are. In fact, if they are good at running businesses they stand to be a sight more likely to run a country well than the current crop of 20-something 'career politicians' who never had a real job and don't know what's outside their ivory tower.

As for 'we would the people in there that the people choose' (sic) remember that millions of voters know only of soaps, Strictly Come Dancing and The X-Factor. I'd suggest that they are not best able to cast their vote with suitable consideration - but that is and will be the downfall of a liberal democracy.

Long an aim of the communists. It would be a tragedy - two houses of short-termist self-select arrogant wkers. It completely misses the point of having two houses.

Bring back hereditary peers!
