Hello all,

Thinking about buying an old car in order to learn how to do some basic maintenance and have always liked the early 90s Audi Coupe. I've seen one which has caught my eye (2.3 10v model) and am wondering if this would be a good idea. Are they relatively simple to work on?

The one I'm looking at has a few minor things wrong with it so should be a good starting point.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Get over on the S2 forum, they'll be able to help you with 99.9% of the queries regarding one of those. Solid old cars with a greeeeaat 5cyl burble. wink

Very simple cars in general but age is the biggest problem now.
20v is the one to have so long as you find a good one. www.20v.org is the best resource site / forum for these cars (in all forms), and the audi 90 equivalent. Much hands on technical info and a buyers guide too.

KV engine! the audis are inline which makes it a little easier to work on. I started getting my hands dirty with the coupe i had, very well made, possibly over engineered, and the 10v engine your looking at for my money is the best sounding unit Audi have made. Lots of them still around as well so spares and advice is commonplace.

Only pain is the lack of Haynes/ Bentley manuals for these, but otherwise yes they are fairly easy to work on, what will help more than most these days is a good forum. audifans.net or s2foru.com both UK centric and have loads of folk who cover this era of car. most participate in both. i missed my coupe so much i just bought a 90 quattro sport 20v at the weekend, it feels more solid than the new A4.

Well I've done it. Bought a 1990(H) Audi Coupe 2.3 10v yesterday and am picking it up later today.

It has its problems, but that's what I wanted, and all for £250. Bargain!

Hearing that five cylinder noise whenever I want to has been long overdue. smile

Hope youve got deep pockets, Audi parts are not always cheap, or at least a decent scrappy near to you with one of the same cars in there.

Not according to the majority of posters on an Audi forum who say that cars over a certain age (can't remember what the cut off is, but mine is one of them) qualify for official parts at a vastly reduced cost.

I doubt it'll be any more expensive to run than my old 911! smile

parts are cheap, for example, wishbones - £35 each inc bushes, subframe mounts £5 each.

Guess what running repairs I was doing this weekend!
