Yes. Its an excellent idea.

Akin to buying a Ferrari F430 without being able to leave the London Borough of Westminster.

No. If you get it unlocked Im sure you can. Just that the 3 network is such a pile of arse, that putting an iphone on it is over capitalisation at best.

30000 free minutes and 20 billion texts for 40p - excellent. If only you had a signal at any stage to actually use it.

For my sins I had a contract with 3 which I paid to get out of. Anyway, other sims wouldnt work in their handset, but other handsets would work with their sim. Some features were limited.

Might be better off lowering your tariff and porting your number

A '3' sim card will not work on a 2G iphone even if it is unlocked, im not sure about the 3G iphone.

And now that the helpful reply is out of the way..

Try one of the piggyback solutions to unlock the iPhone - its the only way with the 3G model unfortunately. I'm running a Vodafone SIM in my UK iPhone 3G which works fine. I never had visual voice mail, so do not miss it. I don't know if a 3 SIM will work.

Lots of places on the Internet with advice on how to do this.

I'm running a 3g iphone with a 3 sim - working fine. You do need a piggyback card, though. (rebelsim works well)

Network coverage is an issue, as the iphone has pretty pants reception at the best of times, my wife's is crap on O2 as well.

Can't fault 3's 3g offering so far, £5 for unlimited downloads..
