That's easily the last time I am going on a train journey that isn't going from Retford to London.

Seriously, I cannot believe people pay money to experience this.

Every year I go to an exhibition in Dusseldorf, I usually drive (Hull-Rotterdam overnight) as it's nice and easy.

I saw a promotional offer on Eurostar to Cologne for £85, I thought why not?

Train from Retford to London was ok for me, some people were standing from Peterborough all the way down to London!!!! Some person sat in the toilet the whole way!

The Eurostar train itself was OK, there was just so much faffing about with collecting your ticket, checking in, security, finding your seat. It's impossible to sleep on the train if you're at a window seat as there is a 500W Torch right above your head (above the window)

Stopped in brussels for an hour, it was cold and nothing to do and full of annoying characters.

The next train was bad, from Brussels to Cologne, full of screaming kids, crappy seats it also ran very slow, it took two hours.

The return was worse, I had a two hour stop in Brussels with the same shady characters, in addition to this there was a gang of Loughborough university students who seemed to be doing a Tour of Europe for "charity"

Fair enough, but they were stating loudly how they were going around getting free food, free accomodation etc by blagging it, why the hell don't they pay for it themselves? I would love for someone else to pay for me to do a trip of europe. It was some kind of competition to see who can get the furtheset,I have forgotten their website as it was written on their bright orange shrts.

Return Journey was delayed by 1 hour on eurostar, this involved waiting in the tunnel for 1 hr!

My connection back to Retford was missed as a consequence. Eurostar stamped my ticket and said I had to go to NXEC and get it changed, the nxec desk at kings X had a jobsworth at the desk saying he couldnt do anything as the ticket isnt anything to do with Eurostar. Annoyingly they didn't give me advanced warning that there was a jobsworth working there in the form of one of those signs.

Back to Eurostar who gave me a signed letter, that finally got them to change it meaning I had to go on a train 1h 40 mins later.

Why on earth do people use trains in this day and age, they are utterly st and I never wish to travel on them again. They are also reducing my carbon footprint per mile travelled which is annoying too!
Rant over.

That'll be escape and evade then. Perhaps next year some of them will be so kind as to remain wherever they 'escape' to.

Cheers,
A Loughborough student

PS serves you right for using public transport!

Sounds like a real bad experience but generally I find it far more enjoyable then loads of motorway miles and have had long delays in traffic and can work if need be.

Sounds like a bad experience. My eurostar trips have been excellent- and well worth paying for 1st class- as soon as yoyu sit, they give you food and as much booze as you like.

Beats flying anyhow. I have left my office in Leicester and been in the centre of Paris in under 4 hours. You cant do that by flying- even if you leave from central London.

Maybe, but the problem is it's pure hassle, technically I can just about get from my home to Cologne without even leaving 1 car seat. Eurostar it's an assload of hassle.

Public transport really is st.

The idea is to get as far as you can (in a 'team') without handing over a penny. Sponsorship is done per mile, i think. Whoever gets the furthest is the 'winner'.

Probably raising money for 'rag', apparently a worthy cause, although to which charities the money actually goes I have no idea.

Last time I took Eurostar was just to Brussels which was ok, but since then it's moved to KCStP which is a pain to get to.

Our trains meanwhile - I can sympathise with you! I've been using them a lot to go all over the place (Plymouth, Exeter, Newport, Warrington & Nottingham) and they're cack. First class gets you enough leg room that you can actually sit down, but no guarantee of food (6 hour journey), no guarantee of a seat (unless you can plan your day to the nth degree and know which train you're getting on assuming an earlier train isn't delayed and you miss your connection), delays mean you miss trains which extends your journey by hours while you wait for the next one, and oh it costs an absolute fricking fortune.
