Hydraulic tappets
Discussion
Has anyone experienced sticking hydraulic tappets on the Rover V8 engine when cold and then disappears as the engine warms. Using Castrol Magnetec and I wonder because of this oils ability to stick to metallic services to provide added protection when cold is potentially causing the problem.
I get this too, I've recently checked the cam lift and the lobes were all fine, I suppose it doesn't help that I've got a high lift cam and strong valve springs (like most TVR engines). Both of these will force oil out of the follower when there's no oil pressure to behind it to keep it there. Some followers are supposed to have one-way valves in them to eliminate noisy starts however I know mine have't got this. Basically unless you're cam is knackered then a hydraulic lifter pumping up is nothing to worry about.

In the past i have been obsessed with this. I have a couple of V8s. When i first had tvr i switched to mobil 1 [as it was supposed to be the best] in the rangie and the noise started. I then switched from mobil 1 on both and it did not happen in either. When i have the 99 griff 500 serviced i state not mobil 1. However i use magnatec in both and alls well. Try an oil flush and change of oil. Of course if your motor has done a few miles, then maybe its time to replace the lifters. I did this on my first tvr, 390 se, i think it was £5 per lifter, plus gaskets etc. It was kinda nice to get down and do it.
