I don't know how many SciFi fans there are out there on PH. But I call for your assistance.

I've been reading a bit more fantasy/sf recently and this morning I am rather confused by something.

Money. Economy. Work. Trade. Where does this fit into 'beyond known space'? Now I get suspension of disbelief etc etc.

BUT If other species are building vast worlds, wondrous spaceships and so on. Who builds them? who does the research, who gets’ paid, presumably nobody gets paid because I have yet to read a book with sf with any type fiscal policy.

So does everyone get allocated a role in society as a clinical researcher, or mechanic, or doctor and just get on with it, accepting they benefit from each playing an individual role instead of seeking out personal greed?

Is this just one utopia style belief too far? Or am i just being mentally bound by my humanistic beliefs?

This is doing my pretty little head in.

I think you are thinking about this far too deeply!

I'd like to think of a future where I rule the world and I'm surrounded by a hareem of willing female underlings who are happy to carry out my every desire.

Who will join me on this quest for world domination?

It is friday and i'm bored already... so...

They didn't have money in Star Trek either, as apparently people did work to "better themselves", rather than to gain material wealth. The idea being that robots and matter transporters made everything, taking care of all the st jobs basically.

You think a Sci Fi writer is interested in writing about fiscal policy, recessions etc?

NO!!
I love things like this.
You know what I always think of?
When I watch Star Wars (or similar films), I always imagine evil alien Engineers building the Death Star, then Evil Alien Quality Inspectors going "the wing for this X Wing fighter is out of tolerance - send it back rejected".

Am I sad?

This reminds me of the 'building contractors on the death star' conversation between the two main characters in the film 'Clerks' .....if you havnt seen it, the gist of it is the death star was not fully built when the rebels obliterate it, killing all the builders and workers not involved in the politics of the empire.
Trust me its a damn sight funnier to watch

There might be no concept of money. There might not even be a concept of "society" where everyone has a little job. Could be a hive mind, or something (more likely) that we've never even considered.

I quite like your thinking.

"Right chaps, we need to draw up a list of evil contractors we can get quotes from to allow us to build our new evil Death Star. We've been recommended Evil AMEC and Evil McAlpine, but just to keep the Evil QS Department happy we need to get some other quotes in. Anybody any suggestions? The Dark Lord is waiting and I told him we'd have the details in by the end of the day."

This is EXACTLY the reason that a New Hope is better than Jedi.

The first Death Star was completed and fully operational before the Rebels destroyed it.But the second one was still being built when they blew it up. Something just never sat with me that second time around. I could never put my finger on it, but something just wasn’t right. The first Death Star was manned by the Imperial Army. The only people on board were stormtroopers, dignitaries…Imperials. So when they blew it up, no problem. Evil’s punished. The second one however wasn’t even done being built yet, it was still under construction. A construction job of that magnitude would require a hell of a lot more manpower than the Imperial Army had to offer, I’ll bet they brought in independent contractors on that thing–plumbers, electricians, roofers. In order to get it built quickly and quietly they’d hire anybody who could do the job. You think a stormtrooper knows how to install a soil pipe? All they know how to do is killing and white uniforms.

All those independent contractors brought in to do the job are killed - casualties of a war they had nothing to do with. Alright, look. You’re a roofer. Some juicy government contract comes your way. You’ve got a wife and kids, the two-story in suburbia. This is a government contract which means all sorts of benefits. Along come these left-wing militants who blast everything within a three mile radius with their lasers. You didn’t ask for that; you had no personal politics, you were just trying to scrape out a living.

See I thought of that....but then I thought, that would mean that other 'beings' would have no emotion at all - which if we are lead to believe the scifi literature, they do. Each race has individual characteristics....which then leads me think there would be potential uprising from discontented workers...a marxist of the puppeteer world so to speak.
