I'm currently watching Batteries Not Included on Dave and I noticed John Cleese has an American twang to his accent. I can't say I've ever noticed this on any other celebrity and this disappoints me slightly as John has always been quintessentially British! Is this common?

AFAIK he's lived in California for 25 years, seems a good enough reason.

What you mean people having a different accent after spending years surrounded by people with a different accent?

Happens to most people

Yes and that Kim Cattrall has completely lost her scouse accent after living in Canada/USA for the last 51 years. wink

Rolf Harris still sounds Australian though, must be put on. In real life he's pure Henley-on-Thames.

These American accents are fake. You cannot unlearn a lifetime accent in a matter of months abroad. Notice how quickly Madonna adopted a British accent?

Fakers, the whole lot of them. Would you expect anything less from people who poerform for a living?

Fake accents really, Really bug me.

But talk to a French bloke on the phone and you end up replying in a French accent. It's weird!

Very true. Probably 50% of people on 1st meeting me think I'm an Aussie or South African.

I've never been to either country or watched Neighbours, however I've spent half my working life in the US, West Africa, Mid East & India, mainly working with Americans, Aussies or South Africans.
