Disclaimer before we begin, I know there's a crunch on and most people don't have 5000 pennies to rub together, but bear with me on this one...

Was chatting to a mate whilst watching the football last night and we got talking about investing at the moment. We're both young guys with hardly outstanding incomes, but limited costs in terms of rent, cars etc and we could realistically take a risk, but not afford to lose the entire pile of cash we invest! We could theoretically both have about £5k spare to invest in the medium term (individually rather than collectively) and were discussing the possible options. We both currently have ISAs which when they were opened in the summer had variable rates of c.6.00% and were wondering if you can beat that rate at this moment in time because, let's face it the falling interest rates won't be doing savings rates much good!

I've considered snatching a good cherished number plate from someone who needs some quick cash (cynical I know, but we have to be realists here!) and sit on that. We also talked about shares in companies that have recently been shall we say propped up by our taxes whose share prices have crashed and might well start rising again sooner rather than later. Other discussions went into short term bonds (unlikely!), currency trading, futures, online CFDs or options and anything else in between. What does the PH collective think about these options and what else could one possibly throw £5k at for a return of better than an ISA over the next 3-5 years?

To be honest it's either invest it or splash the lot on a credit crunch, low price sports car rofl

My thoughts entirely, but after collecting a load of drainage pipe fittings in my car this morning, I feel a Chimaera wouldn't quite offer the same level of practicality! rofl

Look around for the best exchange rate and buy whatever currency has the best deal looking at previous trends. Then stuff it under the mattress and wait for the economy to recover.. which it always will. Just don't buy rupees hehe

Failing that, I can provide you with the best big screen gaming system you have ever seen wink

996, or failing that an ISA, perhaps a Barclays one.

I took the Alliance and Leicester option at 6.1% because I need access to the money just in case (... I want to buy that Chimaera wink) My friend got a slightly better rate with less access at Barclays, but I couldn't manage better than 6.1% accessible with them.

If I can find a 996 that doesn't have 700,000 miles and 32 owners (all getaway drivers) for £5k, then I'll be on it like a dog on heat, but I fear it is an impossible dream!

Right back to work so I expect a 50 page discussion about the state of the economy and 300 suggestions to buy an MX5 when I return after work! rofl

Shares....prices are low at the moment, if you find a company that isn't likely to go under, they're prices are bound to increase after the first couple of months of the new year...

I'm looking at the moment....

V15 BEN was a gift for my 17th birthday, value now around £1500 I reckon, wouldn't consider it especially saleable though (good job I'm keeping it then wink). I would be looking at a fairly common set of initials with a reasonable market in the future accompanied with 2 numbers, ideally following the 2 letters, but if not, then before. The price would be £5k rather than £10k as we would be investing separately. I read on here yesterday that someone got a 2 letter, 2 number JS plate for under £5k so it can happen.

My boss just dropped a few quid into HBOS, something I'm considering though not £5k worth! Maybe a few hundred (won't make much) but just to see what it does in the next year or so...

If i had £5k i'd gamble it on the horses, pobably a safer bet than stocks and shares tbh.

What about property?

My friend is just buying a repo property in Colchester.

Rentals suggest it would be easy to let and he has got a 95% mortgage too so liitle deposit.

He is paying 70kish for it and one sold last year for £160kish (cant remember exact figures)

He plans to keep it for 5ish years.

Its a risk but fairly low cost and if you get someone in there asap it pays for itself.

Good thought Sam. I'd not really thought in much depth about the level to which repo/auction properties had dropped to and perhaps I could reasonably stretch to a 5-10% deposit. All good ideas folks...

You'll not see much change from your £5k once you have paid motgage fees, solicitors fees, and a superficial tarting up jod though so really you need £10k sitting about to do that, and even then you are putting your cock on the block.

I thin that boat has been missed. It will do OK but not the kind of spectacular improvement being looked for here.

I'd sit on the cash a while longer.

I'd probably use it to clear some existing debts tbh. Apart from that I'd go to all the financial institutions and see what guaranteed return investments are on offer. I'm not a big risk taker with money.
