Partner works for RSA (mgr) been told major annoucements happening today... fingers crossed not redundancies (could be takeover as lots speculation recently) either way would probably result in redundancies of some form.

I can understand certain companies losing money, but even companies with sound business are going to the wire (HP 75000 redudancies etc..) is this because profits they have had over the years have been invested badly and therefore they need to claw it back from somewhere, rather than actually making less profit in theuir usual business model?

I wonder how many of these companies are using the economic downturn as an excuse to do some spring cleaning and not catch flak.

I was thinking exactly this - some of them have been very quick in implementing their culling plans...

Announced whole business (RSA) will be restructured over the next 12 months.
So redundancies will be pending...

Indeed.

Restructures to cut positions that weren't required during the boom but headed under the banner of business continuity during the credit crunch and nobody bats an eyelid.

Quite what I am thinking with my partner's company, he got a phone call on Tuesday (while on a day's holiday) telling him that it is in his interests to be at a big meeting at work today (not one of his rostered days in) We are expecting it to be a redundancy announcment and are sure they are doing it just to clear out the people that they don't like (the place is run on bullying and face fitting) my partner is convinced his name has a big red tick next to it.

Surely they can't announce his redundancy unless he is there in person...

no they can't but they can announce they are going to lay-off people they don't like in general without naming names.

Well that's the problem, today is actually one of the days that he is not supposed to be in work, but he has been told by his prat of a manager that he needs to be there.

I was reading up about redundancies and how to go about it the other night, and will be watching with interest that they do it all properly (knowing what the company are like for being shoddy with some practices, it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if they messed up somewhere in the chain)
