Has anyone seen this?

It was on last Thursday 9pm C5. I recorded it and have just managed to watch the first 30 minutes - very good indeed!

It is not the technical type programme, more of what is involved in flying/learning to be a Red Arrow pilot.

I think the programme can still be viewed Here.

Indeed. What really astonished me, was just how close they fly. Having now seen their craft up close, they appear to be a lot smaller than I had first thought. Scale that down when flying in formation - that's very, very close indeed! They are, the very best of the best - Top Chaps!

I liked it so much I watched the repeat as well!

Particularly liked their trip to Canada via Greenland and the woman who got all tearful when they did their heart/arrow formation.

My only claim to fame in this context is that I went to the same school as a chap who was Red 9 (latterly killed in a P-39 Airacobra, unfortunately)

I spent a day with the team a few years back, Jas Hawker was part of the syncro pair before he came back to occupy the Red 1 slot IIRC. I remember them being a bunch of top blokes, very down to earth and in no way what I thought they'd be smile

Brilliant day, I had my picture taken with the team, which still occupies pride of place on my desk smile

Have just watched the second half of the programme and that heart/arrow formation was a nice touch. It's a while since I've said this, but I felt proud to be British after watching that display.

I try to exploit any excuse to post a photo of The Reds.

I saw them for the very first time this year at Farnborough. I'm not ashamed to admit that I had a tear in my eye by the end of their display.

Absolutely magnificent!

IMO this was a great to watch programme. It was lovely to see that both Duffy and Kermit did eventually make it as there was a programme or short series about some guys trying to get through selection to be one of them.

Although undoubtedly editted to show the Reds ina good light, there was genuine envy on the faces of some of the other guys in Canada. Red 1 (I think) was very discreet and polite when he said the others were "different" and flew "different" routines. He did acknowledge that they were very close and good pilots but didnt seem to do as much as our boys.

Awesome skill and incredible balls. In the previous show, they were trying to get the wannabes to line up rivots on the fusilage against the point of the wings; at a few feet apart!!! What the f***? They had to use single points of reference on the next door planes whilst rolling in formation? Bl00dy awesome.

I agree, proud to be British for once!

I used to be groundcrew on 'normal' hawks at RAF Valley. The reds used to come fairly often for a practice, so we'd get to service the aircraft when they first turned up.
There used to be a lot of banter between us and old collegues who had gone onto the reds as groundcrew.
Later on Whilst working at the IAT at Fairford on Tornados we managed to blag tickets to the reds 25th birthday bash, another great evening of catching up with old friends.

Currently i'm helping a chap in work build a kit aircraft, the other co-owner used to be red one.

I flew with Guy B-W a number of times after he joined my fleet at LGW. He was a very very good pilot, with a huge amount of mental capacity. (Like F1 drivers, that's the quality that sets apart the very best from the rest of us). Sadly missed. (It was a King Cobra rather than Airacobra IIRC)

I usually manage to see the Reds at least once every year - sometimes more than once. I admit that they are the slickest of all the display teams but I think that they are run very close by the French Patrouille de France (Alpha Jets) and the Italian Frecci Tricolori (Macchi MB339s). I always thought that the Swiss Patrouille Swisse) were very good when they flew Hawker Hunters but I haven't seen them since they re-eqipped with Northrop F-5s.

A charisma bypass used to be needed for the red arrows

They staged through the Canada when i was based there and even though they landed at lunchtime at 10pm they came into the bar still dressed in their red flying suits and leather jackets ...sad f*cks

Treated their ground crew pretty poorly , when they arrived at a show for the Americans the hosts had laid on hotel accomodation for them and all their ground crew , host were told its ok they have tents they will camp on the airfield!!

Very good at the flying though

I saw this.

It was amusing to see the other teams strutting around (particularly the Americans) before the actual displays, in a peacock type fashion. Then the total admiration they gave to the Red Arrows after they'd performed at the end when they realised that they are indeed still the best in the world.

It's OK, I've calmed down now.

Who is in that shot? I can see the Brits and Italians.
