Call Of Duty: World At War
Discussion
Ive noticed a few threads regading COD:WAW and COD4 and no one yet has actually explained any reasoning behind prefering one to another. So i decided to write a small personal review of my experience, of which i hope will make peoples choice on buying the game a little easier.
I have the PC Format.
Well after spending alot of time reading many a mixed review about the next game in the long line of Call of Duty series i took the plunge.
Since the outset this game the game was due a great s
gging off, for a few reasons. 1. The game devolopers changed away from the group that created COD 4 and went back to the designers who created COD3.. the biggest flop in the history of gaming. 2. How could they better COD4 as it seemed the perfect package.
After installing the game (which again like COD4 isnt the fastest installing game in the world and requires multiple GB of hdd space ) i jumped straight into the settings to have a tweek. Everything is layed out the same as COD4, great means less new things to remember!
I then went straight into single player. Much like COD4 when the levels are loading it displays multiple bits of infomation regarding your mission and about the scene itself, unlike COD4 it also plays random video clips of which i would assume are reall from WW2 and it lets you into a insite of how it actually was back then and sets your mindset before you start.
As soon as the game screen loaded up i was plesently greated with stunning graphics and the same layout at COD4, if im honist i belive its exactly the same game engine just a new set if you like. I wont give away anything about the game but You play a couple of roles like cod4, you play a American Soldier and a Russian saved from slaughter.
Its fair to say ive now played quite a few hours of the story mode and am really enjoying it, whist playing im so wrapped up with it i dont have time to think oh thats like cod4 or cod4 is better because i belive its not. I belive its running on the same level as cod4 and just offers gamers now a choice between WW2 or Current day warfare.
The further you get in the more locations you will visit and this game offers you plane/tank missions which nicely break up the game.
Multiplayer:
I truely belive that in todays market place, the multiplayer mode of any game is what makes or breaks it. How long can a game survive if it has a crap multiplayer side, not long!
COD:WAW has alot to live up to as COD4 made such a massive dent into the multiplayer world! and for that reason i dont belive COD:WAW will over take it on users just yet but if im totally honist, its pretty damm good!. Id even go to say i prefer the multiplayer of this new game over COD4.
Why? well level design is the sole reason i think. I played on a couple of rotation servers yesterday to use all the maps and the levels of detail in them are amazing! They also feel quite abit larger in size than the cod4 maps which makes good exploring and finding new spots.
Overall i really really enjoy the muliplayer side of this game and i will be playing it quite regularlly.
I think the devolopers picked quite a rough time to bring out this game, what with the likes of Left 4 Dead's arrival aswell as multiple console games that have been rated highly all released around the same date. But i do truely belive that it will stand above these and continue to sell and become a highly played game. COD4 was the changing point for xbox360, halo died after a long run as top multiplayer on the console and cod4 took over. i think give it 6/10 months and cod:waw will replace cod4 as the most played multiplayer game on console.
So overall i give it a 8/10, and would say if you liked cod4 you will like this.

Thought I'd bump this back to the top as I'm considering buying COD5 (on 360 but its the same game basically, right?).
So whats the PH verdict? Better than COD4? More of the same.
I really liked COD4, absolutely addicted to the online game for the past few months. Slightly worried they will have struggled to surpass or even match this with COD5 and buying it will be a disappointment and waste of money.

I finished the Single Player (360) storyline on Sunday, and I'm still not sure what I made of the game
I'll try and write a full review tomorrow but quickly; the game has a number of the positives of COD4 and a number of the negatives of COD3.
Difficulty - I'd like to think that I'm pretty good at 1st person shooters (COD4 was challenging but enjoyable on Veteran); but COD5 (very much like COD3) is in places the most difficult/frustrating game I've ever had the misfortune to play. There were at least 3-4 sections that required at least an hour each (4-5 minutes worth of actual play) to complete and probably in excess of 50 deaths at each! I'm glad they thought to make it challenging but there comes a point where it is more frustrating than enjoyable.
Visually - Stunning
Gameplay - Not much different to COD4 (that's a great thing). Includes some excellent missions (sniper, tank and the tunnels).
Multiplayer - Have not had a chance to play on Live yet but had a quick go on local coop and its excellent.
Zombie mode - Only played a couple of times but this may well be the "gimic" that makes the game worth having especially with Live and local coop mode!
More tomorrow.....

I am enjoying it so far but there are certain parts which are stupidly difficult. For instance the Vendetta level where you have to shoot the enemy sniper. Took me about 2 hours straight to get him. Also struggling on clearing the mortar pits in the Far East. Mind you, it is on veteran. Getting a bit sick of being rescued by my fellow soldiers, it seems like every cut scene ends with your character getting pulled out of danger or being rescued much like COD4.
I've been playing COD4 Online for quite a few months, and liked the fact that it is one of the few first person shooters in a modern setting, with modern weapons. I also liked the maps and the perks. I'd done prestige about 4 times, and it was concentrating on improving my kill ratio where before I'd just been going for points/prestige.
I bought COD5 and initial impressions were that it wasn't as good. But after one evening of playing I now prefer COD5. Some of the maps are great, Roundhouse is probably my favourite. It seems fairer, in COD4 I could empty a whole clip into an opponent without him going down, only for him to kill me with 2 or 3 bullets. This happens less in COD5, perhaps because bullet damage seems higher and fire rates are lower than COD4. The Tanks lend an extra dimension to some levels, but they're not all that great, just more variety. I'm still working up to the full set of weapons in COD5, but overall I'm preferring it despite the WWII setting. Oh and the Zombie map is a very nice extra!

I must have lucked out with Vendetta - got into the right position where you can actually get out of the way of his shots and had pretty much no trouble with this level. Relentless on the other hand... that's a bugger to get to the first checkpoint and Heart of the Reich is far worse for grenade spam.Having said that, we played through the last 3 levels on coop the other night and that made the difference - the difficulty is just about right for coop as you can revive your teammates and teammate's AI is someone higher (hopefully!) than your colleagues in single player. Zombies is brilliant too

The online is growing on me - I like the maps and the fact that some of them are large but I'm having a lot of me emptying a whole clip into someone and they don't notice, they turn and shoot once and I'm dead moments, oh and the spawns are apalling sometimes. I died 5 times in a row without getting the chance to move earlier. The pace seems slower than COD4 too which is nice.
