Vitamins/Supplements
Discussion
I'd consider myself to have a reasonably healthy diet in that I eat plenty of fresh food and fresh vegetables, though not much fresh fish and almost almost certainly never "5-a-day" (as an aside apparently in a recent survey 10% of parents though Jaffa Cakes counted towards this!).
So after snacking on a Domino's I happened to be reading the paper and the Health section had a round-up of Fish Oil supplements.
I guess the basic problem with newspapers is that if you take them seriously every day you're going to die from something different that's only just been found to kill you, but assuming my staple diet isn't Kebab meat and Chips, are these worth bothering with?
Ditto vitamin pills - can't help think how the f
k does anyone who walks into Holland & Barrett know what they actually *need*?

They're a supplement that apparently you only need to take if you're missing something and could do with a boost but ideally (because of the way the body processes things) you're best off getting them from fresh produce. So if you're anaemic, then get those iron tablets down you or if you have a cold, take that 500mg vitamin C tablet but otherwise eat that apple instead.
As for H&B, do your research. I shop there regularly. Fantastic stuff there.

I take a cod liver oil capsule and a probiotic vitamin tab most days. The oil is to help a dodgy shoulder which flares up every so often and the multivit just because I work shifts and I think they help my body clock and brain adjust.
I didn't take them for a while and felt a bit down. Once I started them again I felt much better within about 2 days. I wonder if it's a lack of potassium or selenium which can cause brain function to be impaired. No clinical evidence to their effect on me but I think I'm better with them than without.
I've not a particular bad diet but do eat a lot of processed food.

I take a multivitamin daily as well, for the same reason. It's hard enough to find time to eat 3 meals a day when working 12 hour shifts, and working nights leaves me feeling run down on my days off. It may be placebo effect but I feel better for taking them.I didn't take them for a while and felt a bit down. Once I started them again I felt much better within about 2 days. Vitamin tablets = expensive bright yellow wee and that's about it
Not if you get advice from a good nutritionist. A GP or doctor won't have a clue about the affect of certain vitamin/nutritional supplements. Sure you can waste alot of money by randomly taking them but get professional advice and they can bring real benefits if taken in the correct combinations and circumstances.Gassing Station | The Pie & Piston Archive | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
