Carefone warehouse were offering "pay As you go" iphones (version 1) in Leicester the other week, but didn't want to part with £350 to buy it ........

Plus you had to be on O2

Pay as you go need you to top up every month so in reality is just a contract without having to sign on the dotted line.

If he already has an O2 SIM wouldn't it just be a case of putting the old SIM in the new phone?

Nope, you only need to top up if you want to get the 500 minutes free per month.
