Hi - I was hoping to tap the collective wisdom of PH. My girlfriend really wants to go to Berlin for New Years Eve. I had a look on and there are some pretty good hotel deals out there, the only question is what the hell are we going to do on the big night? I'd prefer to book something up beforehand rather than try (and possibly fail) when we're out there.

Has anyone got any recommendations for places to go? Wouldn't mind going to a club but would be happy with a good dinner and bar.

I'd also welcome some recommendations for things to do on the other days whilst we're out there.

Thanks in advance.

I went to Berlin on NYE a few years ago and have to say it was the best NYE I have ever had. They really know how to put on a big party well.

The entire road from the Brandenburg Gate through the Tiergarten was used and down each side of the road were tents which alternated between alcohol and (really excellent) food, and as there were so many places there were hardly any queues.

There were 4 live music stages along the length of the road playing various different types of music. In between the music on the main stage there were circus acts and stuff like that to keep you entertained.

At midnight there was a big fireworks display, and unlike most events like this, the food and beer tents continued serving until well into the small hours (I think we left at about 1am and it was still going strong). It was also extremely friendly with loads of Germans wanting to talk to us to find out why a couple of Brits and gone there for NYE.

And typical of German efficiency, when we got to the end of the road to go home there was a big queue of taxi's waiting to take people away.

Oh, and on New Years Day the road the other side of the Brandenburg Gate was a huge winter market which was also really good.

Have a look at the Berlin NYE website:

EDIT: Oh, and take warm clothes - it was about -5 degrees when we were there.
