Old news to all, but seriously pissed off atm...........

Oil price $150 per barrel, petrol 120p per litre.
Oil price $70 per barrel, petrol 96p per litre.

The biggest culprit of the lot - diesel! why is it 14p per litre more?
Why do we not have some stick to beat these people with? Other than mass non fillup?

AAAAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!

Because the people in charge are in the pockets of the people selling the oil. Always been the case. Don't kid yourself its any other way.

You might want to factor in the GBP/USD - then it makes more sense.

Oil is priced in dollars, and sterling has plummeted.

Par for the course during the dying days of Labour governments.

Plus that fact that a large part of what you are paying is tax which isn't calculated as a percentage so it doesn't go down when the price goes down.

Take your $150 per barrel, what was the £/$ rate, wasn't it about 1.8 - 1.9 ??
Now it's only ~1.5.

That means that the $ drop in the price of oil may ~53%, but the equivalent £ drop is only ~40%

Also, fuel duty is fixed so you are looking at over 50p in duty on your 96p per litre, it's only the product price you can expect to come down. You then have VAT charged on duty + product. (Basically if fuel was given away for a fraction of a penny, you would still be paying almost 60p just with duty + VAT)!

50p excise duty
12p VAT

leaves about 30p a litre to dig, refine, transport and retail the stuff....

I love the way the fuel duty escalator gets wheeled out, the Conservatives may have kept it going they may not, they wouldn't have had good old Gordon Clown as Chancellor so we may not be entering recession so broke we can't do a thing as a country. Also if the fuel duty escalator had been in place I suspect that fuel prices wouldn't have jumped from 90 something Pence to well over a pound, in the case of diesel it was something like 30% rise

Well yes rather than investing the money New Hospitals extra, police officers, New schools and othe public stuff the Tories would have just saved it for a rainy day.

Wonder if they would have done the same as Tory Controlled Norfolk County Council and put it into Iceland.

It's not how much you spend that's the issue though, is it? It's how much of that spend is used wisely. I couldn't piss money up the wall quicker than Brown & Co. That's why the UK has the worst debt situation on the planet right now. I think we are on a par with Pakistan and Hungary - makes you feel proud rolleyes

As instructed by HM Gov using the approved list of AAA rated banks which i think may well have been provided by the government as well.

You're comments are fantastic.

Now why is diesel more expensive by a huge margin?

Agreed.

And Sainsbury's are giving out 5p off vouchers with your food shopping, so filled up yesterday for 87.9p/litre. Can't remember last time it was that cheap.

Is it not that in a gallon of oil there will be certain percentages of what can be turned into oil/petrol/gas/diesel/tar etc. It is thus relatively inelastic and with an increase in demand for diesel the price will naturally increase?

There is always a bigger demand for diesel. Some countries only have diesel.

Trucks and trains are all diesel. In the countryside of a lot of European countries they only sell diesel.

It only seems to be in the UK there is a huge price difference. The petrol prices dropped down to a bit more reasonable amount, but the diesel didn't. So it hasn't really changed much as most businesses it is still costing more to transport and maneuver.

These are the same police officers that were offered a derisory pay rise. The only reason we need more police officers is to keep up with the shedloads of red tape labour introduced.

The same with hospitals - they are so top heavy with management its a joke.
