Without going into the long & short of it all I need some ideas on how to slow down / stall the sale of a piece of land. URGENTLY.

Basically the beneficiary of a prime piece of land is about to let it go for a stupid price just to spite the rest of us – unfortunately the solicitors are dragging their feet and I need to buy a few months extra time. Because this is being questioned it looks like he is going to make a hasty sale.

Apart from the sudden appearance of Crested Newts on the land what else might just work?

Sounds like the OP is also a beneficiary, but doesn't want to realise the current land price?

Yep - undestood that but if it's going for a song as indicated might as well wrestle full control via the back door for a bit of investment.

You'll never get them off and it'll cost you thousands to get the land sorted once you do.

Get someone to 'find' some oil... at the least... investigations need to be done, surveys, test holes... just in case the land could be worth a whole load more... scratchchin

If they are the sole benficiary then it is unlikely you could do anything to stop the sale. However, if there are multiple beneficiaries you could ask the legal bods to let the others know that the land is being sold for a price substantially lower than it's true value. This may then stretch the issue out for long enough to suit your needs. If you are one of the beneficiaries (as your post suggests) or are close to one of them you could do this yourself/help them.

Perhaps if you gave a little more detail (is it a will/inhertance of some sort ?) some of the legal /bods who frequent the site would be able to give you some good advice.

Not in the slightest this is a matter of principal. The land owes us nothing and we would be more than happy to keep in the family.

Olf's idea has been considered - but its a fair old chunk of land... and we honestly couldnt find a close enough (trusted) 3rd party to invest.

All we are waiting for is the solicitors to get their acts together (sounds like we need an extra 6 months) and put us all on an equal footing so no 'rush' sales can be made by one beneficiary acting in the 'best' interests of others.

The third party could be an anonymous trust (owned by your trusted family members) and all negotiations are carried out by a Solicitor acting on the Trust's behalf.

Can you afford to buy it ? If so just use a name for the purchase and do a simultaneous transfer on completion

Okay, so out of interest, how many acres, what sort of land, any chance of planning, whats the ballpark price it's being sold for and what do you think it's worth?
