Inspired by a WW1 news article and the realization that i've got no knowledge, of my family history back that far, I've done a little bit of digging. some work has been done tracing a few lines, but I fancy doing a bit more...

there seem to be quite a few resources on tinternet I.E. http://www.findmypast.com

Has anyone used sites like this are they any good or just a way of making money..

Has anyone come across any good sites, other resources or software thats good for finding info and recording the data?

Cheers

ancestry.co.uk is by far the best and easiest to use resource. I've traced most of my family back to the 1700's using that site alone:

ancestry.com

I've found out quite a bit from there. Obviously start with old family members first, ask where they lived and if they can remember where relatives lived, you can then search houses on the census to find out who lived with them.

Despite the cringyness that is Friends Reunited, Genes Reunited is actually pretty handy. Not only does it allow you to "store" your info, if it finds people on it that you have on your tree (presumably by checking common ancestors/relatives), you get put in contact and can join the trees together.

When it comes to storing your tree, try geni.com . It's free and a damn sight better than genesreunited.

My nan paid to have our family tree researched, I was amazed to find that in the past 300 years my family had remained within the boundaries of Essex. This included my grandfathers side.
I know Essex is nice and all but come on!!

Another satisfied user of Ancestry here.

It is also likely that other people may well have "done" bits of your tree, so Google can be your friend, or try http://www.gencircles.com/ which is a free site for people to upload family trees.

And a couple of good forums: http://www.rootschat.com/ and http://genforum.genealogy.com/

Best of luck, it can be very addictive!
