bit of advice please
Discussion
Hi all,
I was just after a bit of advice concerning a meeting I have tomorrow, I hope i'm asking in the right place!
I am at University, studying a Real Estate Degree; I have signed up to a mentoring scheme, and tomorrow I am to go and meet my mentor. He works for a major real estate firm; the idea is to have someone from the industry to learn from, to help me understand what it is like to work in the industry and direct me in the right way.
I am just looking for some last minute advice as to leave a good impression; I have been researching the company that he works for, and tried to understand his job role, I am fairly up to date with the economy, I will be dressing smartly to meet him, is there anything I have forgotten.
I have always been told that first impressions count, so want to make a good one!
Thanks guys

Your there to learn, so ask questions and listen to the answers.
He was once in your position so don't be too hard on yourself!
If you don't understand, say so and ask for further explanation.
He won't warm to a smart-arse, but sense of humour is always a good thing if directed appropriately.
Challenge if you feel something is wrong, but accept his answer even if you don't think it is correct. You can always debate later with your lecturers.
Oh and enjoy yourself!

Firstly... Early night, bright and fresh for the following day.
As said, ask questions when you don't understand. If you want to impress, where possible extrapolate from what you know to what he is saying such that you can show you've grasped what he is trying to teach you.
Be humble, be polite, shut up when it's appropriate, don't laugh like a hyena, don't fart if you can help it, don't pick your nose or scratch your crack.
Offer to buy the coffee at tiffin, don't talk with your mouth full. Don't pass comment on any women in the Company unless he leads the way first.
Finally if all goes well and you need a job later offer him some man love?
You'll be fine.

Sorry to be churlish and negative, but WTF will a Real Estate Degree do for this great sceptered isle of ours?
It's a bit like Media Studies Degree. Total waste of academic expenditure, both in effort and taxpayers money.
Before anyone asks, my qualifications are in Computing Technology (did that when computers were rooms full of stuff!), Electronics, and Radio Communications (wireless to you!).

The meeting was a real success, really got on with the guy, he is younger than i thought, so got on really well. Thanks for the advice, I was a bit overdressed as I didn't realise they were only measuring up a building not meeting a client. But I suppose I gave the right impression.
This specific degree from the University I am at is 2nd to Cambridge in the UK, and in the top 5 for Europe. It is not a Media Studies Degree, and as for total waste of academic expenditure?? I think not.
The types of firms I will be applying to once graduating include Savills, Jones Lang LaSalle, JPMorgan, DTZ, etc. and I believe all these firms are very respectable and believe they do a lot for this "great sceptered isle of ours".
Sorry for the rant, but I have to totally disagree with you!

I'm afraid I have to disagree, the degree is BSc Investment & Finance in Property, which is a vocational degree which covers modules in Economics, Law, Valuation & Investment as well as some others. It's a bit like Media Studies Degree. Total waste of academic expenditure, both in effort and taxpayers money.
