Ok - can't decide best way to go. Facts are thus:

Friday afternoon (leaving London between 15:00 and 16:00)

Need to get to Frome in the Eurobox

Would you:

A) M3, A303 then up to Frome
B) M4, Off at Bath area, A46, A36......

Multimap is showing 105 miles for Option B, but slightly more time. Option A is 120 miles.

Go with B. I use the A303 all the time and I am trying to keep the traffic light.

M4 off at Chippenham then through Melksham and round the outskirts of Trowbridge.

Reckon traffic will be pretty pants though

tis true - but I have to work unfortunately. I need to be in Frome by 6-7pm........so I should be ok I reckon......

I used to commute to Bristol - so i know I can make it to Bristol in approx 2 hours at that time of day (without any idiots crashing).

M3 A303 all the way.

I just finished a job in Shepton Mallet and afetr doing the same journey many times discovered it is less boring than the M4.

That would be my route too - except on Bank Holidays or busy weekends when the single-lane stretches of the A303 are a nightmare.

nono

Traffic on that road, at that time will be a knightmare. Good route though. I'd advise the OP to forget about arriving "just in time", and leave far earlier than necessary - If you are like me you will find sat in traffic intolerable. I'd rather be really early, park up and find something to kill time - Frome's quite a nice place, and if all else fails there is a cinema to go and watch Bond on

Why? confused If you're worried about speed cameras, they are only from J14-J18, they are virtually never there any more, and if you can't spot them on the bridges you shouldn't be driving at all!

Nothing to do with speed cameras - it`s boring, accident prone and generally clogged up.

I'd go M3, A303 BUT - when you get to Stonehenge, turn right at the bottom of the hill on the A344. About a mile along here is Rollestone and Shrewton. Once you go through Shrewton, take the first left signed to Chitterne (B390). This takes you across the Plains and is a cracking bit of tarmac. It spits you out at Knook barracks on the A36. Go round Warminster on the A36 and take the A362 to Frome.

One of my favourite bits of local road, plenty of overtaking opportunities between Stonehenge and the A36. The only downside of this route is that it's likely you'll hit traffic tailing back along the A303 from where the dual carriageway stops by Stonehenge.

Hang a right at the Aylesbury roundabout and then a Left at the Bullington Cross roundabout, saves the queue up to the pile of bricks.
