I just found out, in the midst of all the redundacies being made at our office, that our Head of Office kindly bought his (rather attractive) female assistant, who is 30 years his junior, a necklace from a world renowed jeweller (think Audrey Hepburn), for close to £500 as a gift for passing her exams.

Is this appropriate?

I'm starting to wonder that myself. Either that, or he wants to.

He probably bought it out of his own pocket - whats it got to do with you how he spends his money?

It may be unsympathetic however.

Rather depends on whether he bought it with company money.

If he's trying to bribe her to shag him, what business is it of everyone else? They all had their chance!

Also, do you reckon his wife knows? - I'm just curious as to whether you would do that in his position?

I bought one of my (ex) employees a £3000 watch as a thank you a few years ago.
Don't see anything wrong with it.

She'll be the only non-senior member of staff to get a company car soon as well. New VW Golf GT TDI with a fuel card. You can be sure then that the boss has got his weasel greased.

Sounds like something David Brent would do, with his bonus for reducing costs by announcing redundancies.
