A note for self builders

I have just been told by the electricity company that it takes 3-4 months to relocate the temporary supply to the house!!!

Their goes the Christmas deadline, we gonna be lucky to be in by spring at this rate

Really cant believe how long it takes to lay a 40m wire!!(It also costs around GBP1.5-2.5k!!)

This is a low point.

Can you not lay your own cable & install the kit yourself (i.e. get an electrician to do it) and then just get the E-board to connect it up?

Can we do this? I thought the electrician could only do inside stuff??

Will have a word with our sparky, we desparetly need to get the boiler on so we can get the UFH heating on, then turn it off again and lay the wood flooring, before Christmas!

we had a quote to bury a cable across a field so we didnt have a telegraph pole in view, about 120m - £12k.... i'm getting used to that pole now..

LOL, yep, over budget, over time, you could never guess its our first time!

Its also quite hard PM when both you and your wife are doing min 14hour days at work ontop of building a house!

Still, the experience has been great and we will know how to be more efficient at it next time!!

Do you know which part of the leccy board needs to do this? AS the people who connect the meter were available for Monday! But the people who lay the cable needed the 3-4 months just to quote for the work!

This is why a lot of property development falls at the last hurdle with interest being paid on loans until they the houses are sold.

If you are going to self build it pays to get into early discussions with the local service providers at the planning stage to ensure you are looking at the connection, not waiting for it.

I have run Tower Cranes on generators for up to two years, as long as they are earthed and you get can get diesel to them they are fine and reasonably quiet.

Whats the rest of the project like?

Is the temperary supply meter already on a board somewhere. If so leave it there, build a small brick enclosure round it and run your own armoured cable to a new submain in the house with consumer unit. You therefore do not need to involve the elec board at all.

Dont fancy doing the generator thing due to the noise, its in a quite village in Suffolk where at night you can hear someone fart at far end of the village, a diesel generator may not make us popular (or more accuratly, it may make us more unpopular than we already are !)

Yes you can use a genny. There is a place in Ipswich rented me one, you couldn't hear the thing if you were more than 10m away. Was really that queit.

That, I do not know. However, it's worth phoning a few up and asking. 'They' charge enough for the volts, if you are able to shop around then you might find something more quickly.

I think the regional supplier, EDF, YEDL etc will have to do the physical work, its only the supply that you can switch. Basically the infrastructure is owned, the supply of leccy through it isn't.

I am sure if you talk nicely to the leccy guy , he will have a contact to doa "live swap" on a Saturday morning once you have done the leg work.

Probably be the same guy who would normally turn up in uniform during the week.

Expect to pay about £350 for his services
