Girlfriend attacked on the way home
Discussion
I'll make it brief, I thought I'd share this because I always used to say "it won't happen to me/someone close/someone I know", and also to commend a few people.
Yesterday at about twenty past twelve my girlfriend was walking down a residential street on the way back from Uni, turned to go down a footpath that something like a thousand students must use a day, and was attacked by (at this point), an unknown man. He dragged her into the church that is parallel to the pathway, punched her in the mouth and tried to rob her. Only to say "its ok, don't worry about the money" once he
a) heard she only had a tenner and
b) saw the Priest coming down after hearing the commotion
After that, he shut the church door behind him(?!) and left. Clearly the chap was prepared as he had a pair of surgical gloves and a balaclava on! Obviously the police were called and they sat around mine yesterday for something like two(!) hours taking statements and evidence.
I am so angry, but also I have an absurd feeling of hopelessness. Its unlikely the man will get caught because there are no CCTV cameras around there and also due to the whole balaclava thing. The police were obviously very helpful and its been classed a "priority crime". I don't know if that means anything though. I'd like to commend the police officers and everyone on the phones though - they came very promptly to my house and were very professional and helpful with everything - I do sympathise with them now having seen the amount of paperwork they filled out yesterday! I'd also like to thank the priest in the church, if it wasn't for him God alone knows what might have happened. I don't want to think about it. He was very helpful and has given a statement to the police also, as well as ringing me as soon as it happened. I know all you guys on here hate the idea of us being watched 24/7 by thousands of CCTV cameras, but the place where it happened has no CCTV anywhere - you come from our campus where there are shedloads of cameras and then onto public land where there is nothing. I can't help but think that CCTV can be a good thing as well as a bad thing after this little incident.
I don't know what the point of this post is about - I'm just struggling to comprehend people at the moment. I'm sure you guys can relate.

Fecking hell :|
I'm constantly worried about the missus at uni as she is happy enough to walk around with not much care in the world.. I cant even come to think how much anger you must have.
Show her support.. It maybe worth changing the route to uni.
Personally, I would be off for a walk near where it happened with a rather sharp thing... Doubt it would do any good though

Sympathies mate, sounds like a nasty shock for your girlfriend. Would CCTV have been any help though considering he had a balaclava?
The paperwork thing has got to be stopped though, it's strangling our emergency services, I was the cause of a spirited ride in the back of an ambulance the other week and the poor guy had to fill in a form that resembled a job application, he had been doing his job for years and was still struggling with the damned thing

Im sorry to hear that Hun i hope your OH is ok?
Its scum like that who need to be dealt with at birth, and he probably just wanted to attack her because she is a young girl on her own vunrable and a easy target, or so he thought, just so he can get some money for his next fix and didn't think through he heroin infested body and brain that he is going to hurt such an innocent girl for the sake of his own pleasure. sick sick crack fiend

Sad news, hope they find the guy and hopefully they will put some kind of preventative measure in that path since so many students use it.
I got attacked in the street by a bunch of drunk teenagers after they asked me for a fag and I told them I didn't smoke (which I don't). Luckily they did it outside a busy pub full of squaddies and the police were around the corner at another pub and nabbed them. Sadly they only seems to pursue one of them any further and he spent the night in the cell. Apparently he said sorry or something and had to pay me £30, I severely doubt that will stop him trying it again but the mighty smack one guy gave him in the face may have helped.
Not a pleasant thing to happen.

That is so horrible, really sorry that she's gone through that. Hope she's starting to feel a bit better soon.
I can understand you wanting to go and seek revenge, but as people have already said, it probably wouldn't do any good.
Just be there to support her I guess, she's going to need it.

Now isn't the time for mirth... but am I the only one to spot this statement... not becoming evangelical now are we Mr Rascal?btw, been mugged myself in the past, terrible experience that I wouldn't wish on anyone.. partially photographic memory doesn't help either as I can still "play back" the video memory of every moment of the encounter 10 years later..
Look after your GF, she needs serious support right now..
About 9 years ago my wife (girlfreind at the time) was followed and harrased by a guy while she was walking to meet me after work, she eventually after getting pretty scared by the guy trying to get her into doorways etc went into a phone box to phone me (no mobile, as it was in the late 90's) the guy followed her in and tryed to kiss her forcefuly, she managed to run away and get me, but she was realy shaken up.
The thing is I felt so helpless and angry (4 hrs of driving about with a couple of mates to see if we could find him) but especally helpless, and guilty for not being there, it took along time for the emotions to go from my point of view but my wife has never had the same ability to go anywhere alone.
These guy's have no idea that what they do effect people for life, f

s.sorry to hear that mate. it must have been horrible for her to say the least, but i can identify with how it might have made you feel too.
a couple of years back at uni i had moved away for a work placement. was on the phone to my then OH as she was walking home from work at night only for her pleasantries to interrupted by screaming and shouting before the phone went dead. rand back immediately but it went straight to answerphone.
panic isn't the word, made worse by the fact i only lived 50yards away from her house beforehand but was now a good 2hrs drive from being able to do anything. luckily some common sense kicked in and i called the police to relate the story, a likely assault, and the likely route she would've taken.
i have never been more thankful to BiB in my life as i got a call back about ten mins later from the officer who had luckily been passing a few streets away. she had indeed been punched and mugged and had been laying on the street in a daze. they took her home and stayed until her housemate came home. a few bruises but no more than that thankfully as it was a particularly scummy area of manchester.
have been mugged at knifepoint myself but no crime against me has been as scary as that incident. she was only 5'2" as well the gutless b

eta: try and calm down, she'll need you to be. do something nice together at the weekend to cheer her up

Sad to say a lot of them know EXACTLY what sort of effect it will have on the victim. They are counting on it to assist them in the commission of their offences and evasion from detection.

s.As for the idea that incidents like this support the case for CCTV, and not being argumentative but factual, but just how much more chance do you honestly think there would be if there was a blurred image which failed CPS guidelines/the standards for such set by precedent for it's use? Seriously, dark area, night, balaclava, gloves (dark clothing?).
Kinda reminds me of what happened to a close friend of mine only 2 weeks ago
Though the guy's since been caught after being picked up at the local hospital... with a broken wrist.
She'd defended herself and broken the guy's wrist in the struggle and he'd done a runner. Turns out she'd broken it in 3 places too!
Anycase hope they catch this piece of scum and put him away where he belongs

area of manchester.
Says it all.that said, when i was mugged i had a knife put to me on a busy street in the city centre in broad daylight and people just turned a blind eye. luckily he was pretty dim an made off with a tenner instead of the few hundred quid i had taken out for a charity ball.
