My Grandmother recently died aged 100. We celebrated her life rather than made sad by her death. A centurion is still a rare thing.

Anyway, i have always thought that her life, the century she lived..1908 - 2008 was the most 'productive' & mankind changing that there has been..in relatively modern times.

She lived at the dawn of powered flight, and for her 80th she went on Concorde!
She lived to see the massive increase in technology, including the start of the space race...moon landings etc.

She also lived through 2 world wars!

I wonder, will we see a repeat, an up & coming century that makes so many discoveries & achieves so much progress?
Tbh, it's as if we are going backwards in some respects. Concorde gone & moon landings a distant memory.

My Grandmother lived through an amazing time, what could the next 100 years bring?

If totalitarianism or world war three doesn't stifle/kill the lot of us, we could see -

Mars Landings
Off-world stationing on the moon
Commercial Space Flight
The birth of truly clean, cheap energy
Strong Artificial Intelligence

Flying cars!
A robot in every home!
Houses on the moon!

I for one welcome our new Robot overlords.

Seriously, that's a really hard question to answer. I suspect the biggest advances will be in genetic engineering and nanotechnology. The barriers are going to be our ethical reactions to those developments. Is it "right" to guarantee that you will have a strong, healthy child?

I think this century might also be one of serious conflict between Islam and Judeochristiantity, as Islam develops in power/numbers and exerts its influence. Hopefully not leading to the the complete destruction of civilization at the same time.

But who knows? If I could predict stuff like this I would be rich.

lets face it, if the greenies get their way (and it looks like they will) we'll be going backwards.

Sadly, I share this view. I think that

Are very unlikely but I can see commercial space flight and a move towards clean energy happening. AI is already moving on and our current relaince on technology shoudl drive this too.

You're right, 1908-2008 is one hell of a time to live - hopefully the technological revolution will be seen to be as significant as the industrial revolution.

Quality thread!

I think its pretty difficult trying to predict, advances in different feilds happen so quickly something that you thought was impossible could happen over night.

100 years is a bloody long time, look at whats happened in the past 10 years!! I think more than likely we'd have blown ourselves up by then anyway.

I think the greatest change has been in the way we connect, to each other, and to information.

The web, and to a lesser extent, mobiles, have changed the world and will continue to do so.

I think the concept of a wired internet will look increasingly archaic.

I can imagine a future that consists of no actual monies being carried. Everything will be linked to a single I/D card acct that does everything.

Maybe the worlds powers will become 'one'..a federation if you like.
Star Trekkin across the universe....hehe

What else? Well, my own wish is to see real progress in space exploration. Hopefully in my time here they will establish an actual Moon base or Mars?
Maybe trips to the Moon or ISS can be available to anyone who wants to go?
Science fiction? Maybe, but when my Nan was little the 1st sight of a horseless carraige was extraordinary. I remember her saying the 1st time she really saw one her father insisted it would never catch on!

And who knows - maybe we can discover the big one by 2108..ET life.
Hopefully we will have advanced enough as a specie by then not to go in shooting, Kirk style!

It would be amazing if i even got close to my Nans age before my death. Men in my family all seem to snuff it by 60!! Goody...23 years left! frown
Crap..that's put a downer on the day.frown

I think the coming century will only see even more rapid advances.

And sad to say, but I think the concept of a WW3 isnt so far off. Advances in many fields came as a direct result, so IF this were to happen (which I believe it will), then we shall see another leap in the level of technology available.

As for specific areas, I'd be guessing civilian medicine, biotech, laser, communications, and transport would figure prominently, along with many related armed services applications.
