Its easy to guage car insurance it seems but I have just got a renewal for my current insurer for contents on a two bed flat, 2nd floor in a decent area and its gone up by £150 to £325.

Any rough guides for what one should be paying and any decent companies for solely 'contents' insurance.

Have you tried the usual, gocompare.com, confused.com, etc?

On a side note, beware of underestimating your contents.
I read somewhere that lots of people do this aand are caught short if they need to claim big.

Hiscox are the best imho, they have done just contents for me in the past and their level of cover is very good.

ETA I am paying about £300-350 with them anyway but that's for a £100K cover with loads of extras.

Worth paying a bit more so you know that if the worst happens you won't have a battle with them rather than just going for the cheapest I reckon.

I found that the tescocompare site was the best comparison site.

what policy you buy depends on what sort of contents you have. if you have £30k of general contents with only one or two items over £1500 then go to gocompare.

if you have higher sums including valuable art/jewellery etc etc then the likes of tesco/direct line/ aa will be no good you will need to try hiscox/chubb/zurich private clients/sterling where the cover is a lot more comprehensive.

like most things in life you get what you pay for go cheap and there will be 1001 warranties on the policy pay more and there will be none.

Hiscox all the way for me, that said if you don't have more than £40k's worth and or less than a couple of high value items one of the normal 'big name' insurers should do you fine, but make sure you read the T&C's

Another vote for Hiscox - I think we pay around £350 a year, but thats in central London and for a reasonable amount of cover

I'm only paying £30 more than that for £500,000 Buildings and £50,000 contents with Legal & General, on a 3 bed semi....
