All, or rather, those who would know, and those who would be interested...

Would people be interested in C/F replacement body pannels and parts for their TVR's?
As far as I can see, it would be good for two reasons - lighter but stronger, and also help keep more of our cars on the road.

I know a few people on here work with C/F - what kinds of costs etc would we be looking at to get pannels done - especially with people like this http://www.damagedtvrs.co.uk/stock_pages/sagaris.h... able to sell moulds etc...

What are people thoughts?

Hi Don i work in Prepreg carbon and make parts for TVR's and yes a mould could be taken off a part like the Fiberon ones, but when we make our moulds we have build them up in stages then heat cure them to 85c,. and if we autoclave them they need pressurising as usually any small voids collapse under the pressure,as to costs to give you an idea the trade price for 200 gram twil prepreg per square metre(which is about 0.2 of mm thickis)is about £36.00 + VAT, or to put it another way a square metre 2mm thick would be £360.00 material cost

So a Sagaris c/f bonnet would be approximately £400...without work. Interesting. Thank you!

I cannot see how making panels out of CF would keep them on the road , in fact , if they were in an accident they would be more expensive to fix so more likely to be written off. I have made many panels including a complete griffith in carbon kevlar but would still say it is not worth the expense on a road car . It easy to make panels stronger and lighter than original particularly on a sagaris , David

I recently emailed Surface & Design with a similar question.

They're developing a two piece roof for the Griff's.

My Griff is black and the roof is carbon fibre on the inside. This is pristine on the carbon side, but scuffed on the fabric outside from being in the boot.

I thought if I had the same carbon fibre on the outside it would be hard wearing and look good on a black car.

S&D said that carbon fibre can soon look weathered. This could be overcome. However, they thought the idea too expensive.

Think you'll find your roof if carbon fibre look GRP, Fester, not actual CF. bit like 4.5 airboxes on Cerbs.

Ok lets get this straight..
The roof on the Griffith was ACTUAL CARBON FIBRE MATT laminated on top of POLYESTER GELLCOAT and with POLYESTER RESIN, so, it looks good but if you hit it with a hammer you'll shatter the gell coat and crack the resin impregnating the matt.
Real racing Carbon Fibre is EPOXY IMPREGNATED Carbon Matt which combines with the fibres unlike Polyester resin, which kind of just sits on top (crude description), but describes the difference.
It basically looked good, was inexpensive and more importantly - avoided the cost of trimming a concave surface on the roof insides.
These were mainly laminated by 'Sleepy Dave', wonder where he is? and sometimes with the help of 'Quasimode'...lol, I kid you not.
Sleepy Dave helped me make the Cerbera Showcar with the Carbon dash.
Now that looked fantastic, unfortunately the dash found its way to 'Trigger's' speedboat interior..oh well, theres progress for you.

Hmmm....I know that they are not too heavy to start with but I would love a cf roof for my Tuscan.

I could tell myself that the reduced weight high up kept the Centre of Gravity lower and justified the cost....

There is a CF Tuscan out there - owned by a guy in Cambridge. Also has NOS installed (but not switched on, well it wasnt when I borrowed it for Dads funeral).

Amazing looking thing, a lot better in the flesh than in pics, so I am guessing it can be done smile
