the main thing I remmeber from my childhood is the BERMUDA TRIANGLE

i don't really remember my house where i grew up, or my folks much, i had a brother but can't say i have many memories of that... can't picture much of school either

but I DO remember the Bermuda Triangle.... its all anyone ever banged on about and there were tons of books and tv programmes about it all the time ?

why has the world forgotten the BERMUDA TRIANGLE ?

(and wasn't it all proven to be down to a load of old methane or something ?)

Global warming caused it to melt!

(On the basis that both are myths of their time)

The myth surrounding the Bermuda Triangle was shattered in 1978 when scientific research proved that the triangle was not actually a 'triangle', but an 'oblong'.

Almost overnight, the sinister sounding Bermuda Triangle had become the much more 'sailor and pilot friendly' Bermuda Oblong.

A futile attempt at restoring the myth of the old Bermuda Triangle was made by a number of A-list music celebrities. Unfortunately, Barry Manilow's minor hit failed to capture the public's imagination in the same way as it would later do with the USA for Africa's 1980's chart topper - 'Feed the World'. By the early 1990's membership of the Bring Back the Bermuda Triangle (BBTBT) society had dwindled and the group finally locked its doors for good on the 4th March 1998.

So where is the flight of missing US navy planes that took off from Ft Lauderdale in perfect weather conditions...?

Didn't it move to the Gorgonzola Peninsula and trouble a herd of mangroves? I think I read that in National Geographic.

Close Encounters. I know but I thought they were just body doubles.

I believe the lead aircraft had a malfunctioning compass. The other pilots had no radio so just followed the leader on the wrong course - between islands and straight out to sea, thence to run out of fuel.

There was a plausible explanation put forward on Discovery a few years back. Something like there being a loose sedimentary sea floor, underneath which was a lot of methane hydrates. When disturbed they would fizz/bubble to the surface creating a lower density fluid than "normal" sea-water, thus causing the sinking of any boats.

Then, after the boat hit the sea-floor, it would be completely covered by the settling loose surface.

It also went some way towards explaning why planes also fell victim to this. Basically if a plane is flying through a cloud of the released methane, it can cause an explosion, plane plummets into the sea and is covered up again the same way the boats were.

It was quite a good explanation I thought.

IIRC Mythbusters did the 'bubbles sink boat' thing.

Methane is heavier than air...
