I've never had to use a removals firm before - just got a quote of £564 inc VAT for moving stuff from a 2 bed place in London to Surrey. Insurance cover is £50k. Does that sound reasonable?

Got the other pad to empty out as well, anyone have any recommendations for removals firms near Bournemouth? (Or in Surrey for that matter)

ta!

We moved from Barnstaple to Exeter about six weeks ago (50ish miles) and it cost just over £600 including VAT. That was one large lorry and one medium sized.

Around six month ago, I think I paid around £650 to move contents of a two bed cottage approx two miles in S London/ Surrey so your quote looks in the ballpark.

A few a removal companies round my way have ceased trading as there is not enough business to keep them going. Depending on your timescale it might be an idea to keep a eye on your local paper.

I had a quote to pack the 2 bed split level flat I live in - transport to a new place 15 miles away and they wanted.... £1049 !!! That was with them packing but not unpacking. I used them 6 years ago and it was no where near as expensive and I haven't added much extra to my belongings.

I have now started the tedious task of packing but saved £1049 !

you can probably pick your own price at the moment.

That's the sort of figure I was expecting (not that I had any real idea) so was fairly pleasantly surprised, doing the packing myself though they are providing the boxes, clothes carriers etc.

Moved 2 years ago for the cost of hiring a 7.5 tonne wagon, and a few beers for some mates.

My O/H moved from Tenby to down near Penzance back in June and it was over £1600 ! 3 bed house but not overly full.

That was quite a long way but still yours sounds a bargain...

I hired a 3.5t Luton van for 5 days (£300) and moved a 4 bed house contents 120 miles. It took 5 round trips and £250 worth of diesel. Never again. Absolute fookin nightmare.

Indeed, moved ourselves with 2 of my mates when we left our 2 bed flat for 3-bed semi years ago in a horse box/van thingy - NEVER again. Image of my mate catching 2-seat sofa being dropped from 1st floor balcony will stay with me forever! hehehe

Now pay men to do it for me.

Moved in Feb 5 doors down the road from 4 bed detached to bigger 4 bed detached - cost £450 - well worth the money, if not just to have someone else move my treadmill - those things weigh a fking ton and are an arse to move.
