Wheel arch trim protection/painting

Has anyone undertaken an overhaul of their wheel arches? The wheel arches on my 2003 Tuscan are, in places, cracked and some of the factory fitted protection has come away. The wheel arch trim seems to made of a smooth plastic substance. I've painted over the affected areas with a regular underbody sealant which, when dry, feels rubbery and is of much thinner consistency.

Does anyone know what the original stuff is and where I might get some. My garage has offered to do it for me but the stuff they use dries to form a sort of 'orange peel' effect and I'd rather, if possible, try and keep the original finish.
