any one know about electrronic drum kits ?
Discussion
quite fancy one, always liked drumming but the noise has always been a problem living in a semmi, and eventually I lost interest. just been looking at these http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=AhkRik4NRs0 they seem quite good although a little expensive. could you actually use them for gigging or are they just a practice type thing? I can just imagine having a few jars of an evening letting rip with my earphones plugged in.
Also is it possible to plug in an ipod to drum along to your favourite music?
cheers

Noel,
Not for gig use, I doubt, unless you can hook up to an amp - but then there would be a problem with them sounding 'real'.
I've spoken with persons who use both, they state that electronic sets are worth the money. Apparently mesh pads are better as they get louder the harder you hit them! Realistically you only need a mesh snare.
I'm sure someone has designed a kit for the Ipod to work in conjunction with.

Hi Noel,
I've been playing for about 2 years now.
Started on a Yamaha DTXplorer (£450) Really good starter kit, but as with most kits that have rubber pads you just can't get the feel of what real drums will be like. It has great sounds and features though.
I've since upgraded to a Roland TD-12 : like the one in your you tube clip (£1750) so big investment. The difference in feel is remarkable , as the pads have mesh heads and feel like real drums. This is really important when learning the dynamics of playing as lots of the musicality is in the tap/light strokes contrasted with accented/hard strokes. Roland do a beginner kit TD-1 then TD-3 , TD-6 etc. Just check out their site- all have mesh snares. The TD-12 kit is definitely good enough for gigs, always see them on TV (Jools Holland , Jonathan Ross' guests etc.)
I play through my earphones in a little brick shed. Earphones are good as you can play as loud as you like without waking anyone.
Looking back, I would have had lessons earlier as I "built a house starting with the roof" as my teacher said. I never intend to play for anyone but myself, and it's a great way to distract yourself and focus the mind. Before lessons I just worked from books but no-one could tell me where I was going wrong and would get frustrated when unable to play the groove I wanted.
Search youtube for yamaha dtxplorer and Rolnad TD-12 to get a feel for the kits and sounds.
Both of my kits allowed you to plug in your i-pod and jam along, you can't mute the drums so you have to play along/over them.
Enjoy! ba-da-da-da-tsshhhhhh

A cheaper alternative would be a Roland HD-1, round about £425, if you just want something to bash around on after getting in from the pub, but again, no good for gigging. Nothing quite has the "presence" of a real kit when playing live, and there's also more hardware to hide behind when the fighting starts. Against this is having to lug all that s
te to and from the gig, first to set up, last to pack away while the singer is chatting up the decent birds.

I know how it is, my dad is a drummer and I've been dragged to gigs to help him get all his gear sorted, I wanted to get as real as possible so saving a few quid up for a better model isn't too much of a problem ( might loose me a few pounds as well with any luck)
