Well this is a first. Just listened to a debate on Radio 2 between a public school teacher and a rep from the NUT. And I ended up agreeing with the lady from the NUT!

The public school teacher was arguing that we should make it compulsory for children to wear a poppy. The basis of his case was that because many millions of brave soldiers died to keep our freedom of choice and expression we should force children to wear a poppy as a sign of thanks. He was unable or unwilling to see the contradiction in this. His only defence appeared to be shouting louder.

Now I agree with the NUT where will it end? Will I become a vegtabalist, buy the socialist worker and ban winners on sports day?

Explain it to children and most will make the correct decision.

It shouldn't be compulsary for anyone to buy and wear a poppy.

However, anyone who chooses not to is an ungrateful idiot.

Why? I've donated to the poppy appeal but didn't put a poppy on as it would damage the lining of my coat and fall off anyway. Just because I don't have a poppy on doesn't mean I don't care

I assume this was on Jeremy Vine? Because I'd really like to know where he finds some of the fools that he puts on the air.

How do you come to that conclusion? Do you think that it's impossible to be grateful for war veterans' actions without wearing a poppy?

yes
Making it compulsory to wear a poppy would,in my opinion take away some of the meaning of wearing one.If I recall, one of the news readers refused to wear one on air?

Oh ffs, so you think that buying the symbol and leaving it in a cupboard achieves anything....?

It's "remeberance day", not give a few quid to some old codgers and get them to fapp off cos next year there will be less of them left".

I remember years ago, poppies were everywhere, on cars, all kids wore them at school, adults wore them for at least a week around the day. No one cared about "marking their coats".

Grow some, get a poppy, put it on, and actually have a think abiout what it means to wear it, what it symbolises, and how many people stepped up to the plate to defend things they did not always understand, but did it because the alternative was barbarous and not worth thinking about!

And the old "coffing dodger" you gave your quid too probably didn't want to get his coat marked back in 1944 either, but unfortuately, his best mates brains had other ideas and made a right awful stain.

Enjoy siding with the lefty goody two shoes fool from the NUT, maybe consider a move to France.

Oh and it goes to show why anyone with any ounce of sense will try their best to get their kids into private education too, as unless they do, none of our kids will grow up with an ounce of respect for this country or it's past.

No it is not. Contributing helps, but that is not the most important thing at all.

S3fella: why do you think that it's impossible to be respectful of war veterans without wearing a poppy? Do you think that people wear a poppy near Remembrance Day are not respectful for the rest of the year because they've not got a poppy on?

Not at all. The important bit is being grateful and donating.

I do happen to think that it's a very nice gesture for people to wear a poppy to show their gratatude. Both for old service men, and those fighting in Iraq/Afganistan - we don't really do big welcome home marches in this country. I think wearing poppies is a nice, understated and dignified alternative.

Part of me says, "I see your point" - you contribute, so that's good enough.

The other side of me says "you're worried about the lining of your coat, after what these people gave up"

If you make something obligatory it becomes nothing more than a chore. Wear a poppy remember some old codger from a way back? Hardly the right message is it. Wear one because you want to - not because you have to.

The man's got a nice coat*. Leave him alone wink

Maybe they could do stickers next year. You know, for people with nice coats.

* I don't wear a poppy if I'm wearing a waterproof coat - I don't need a little wet patch every time it rains during the other 11 months to remind me that I'm grateful!

Wow so you actually agree with this guy. And you think forcing children to do things gives them respect? Not sure you've quite got the hand of this eduction thingy.
