I need to automate my current garage door. No really!

It's a single canopy type with vertical runners. I've seen lots of kits advertised for around £150 to £200. Any advice on particular makes and what to look out for would be appreciated.

Cheers in advance.

Now I've thought about this. If they catch you with one on your grille and try to prosecute, but in actual fact you do have the garage door mechanism to justify it being there, can you be found guilty?

From my limited investigations, especially if your garage is attached to the house, get a belt driven one as opposed to a chain driven. Much quieter.

Screwfix do some and I was intending to get one myself - to save me having to get off the bike.

If it is genuinely to open the garage door, as someone has said get the belt driven type as they are much quieter.

Also get one with a remote, that way you can put in any car, or you back pocket if on a bike etc!

Yup I agree with that.

I got one with remotes, so I just leave it in the car.

I bought a chain driven one from Aldi or Lidl last year. £50 ! Fitted it to one of the Garage doors (Hardwood door - bloody heavy) and it works great. Supplied with 2 remotes and it even has a built in light that activates for 30 seconds after opening the door. I think it was made by Einhell or somesuch.

Must admit that it is a tad on the noisy side, but once lubed up (oohh err!) with some silicone grease it was much quieter.

As its a canopy style door you will need something called a lever arm adaptor as this kind of door is not really suited to automation. I fitted motors to both of my canopy doors last year and they work ok with the lever arm but not as quiet or smooth as friends who have the more expensive tracked garage doors.

The motors I used were cheap on ebay from some company in Germany, the lever arm from screw fix
