Cash rich - time poor
Discussion
I can't help feeling more and more that as I spend more time at work either here in the office or on the estate that my children are seeing less and less of me and therefore I feel guilty. I know I pay for my sons karting and my daughters trips to Norwich and everything but I sometimes feel they have expensive presents to stop me feeling this way. Anyone have any ways of dealing with this or am I just being stupid?
Well, you can give me the cash then it wouldn't feel like you're living your life just for the money. If you're not willing to give me the cash then you are living just for the money and could maybe take a look at your priorities in life.
I doubt you will ever get to old age and say, I really regret not spending more time in the office.
Drop me a pm/email and I can send you my payment details.

Don't know what your job is ... but since it's office based can't you do some of it from home? It's a good 13/14 years since I had similar thoughts after missing my eldest's nativity play and I spoke to my bosses (at a well known Norwich Insurance company) and got an agreement to do some of my work from home. I started doing the afternoon school pick-up and visits to parks and then more work after the kids went to bed. Made a huge difference!Edited by Mark-C on Wednesday 5th November 21:59

hmm my dad works pretty long hours at the moment but me and my brothers are fairly old so it doesn't affect us at the moment, but when we were younger ages 7-12 my dad had a job that required him to be away from home 5 days a week ever few weeks and to be honest it did have quite a major impact on the family in a whole. Mother getting stressed out us wanting to see our dad but couldn't so he left that job for something that didn't require so much travel.
If you are feeling like you are spending to much time at the office and the kids need you more then I would say be with the kids but ofc life is not that simple is it.

Life's not a dress rehearsal. Why do you work so hard? To retire to a big house and then spend your whole retirement wishing you'd seen your kids grow up?
Work is only as busy as you make it, refuse tasks, talk to bosses, if you are the boss delegate more. You are probably creating problems for yourself.

Id be feeling both guilty and stupid if I kept sending my daughter to Norwich!M005 said:
As someone said on the 'Best advice you've ever been given thread', no one ever said on their death bed that they wish they had spent more time in the office, but I'll bet there are those that have said they wished they had spent more time with their family.
Your choice.
Not true.Your choice.
In most cases the big thing that stops most people from doing what they want is money.
A lot of people probably do end up wishing that they'd had enough money to do the things they dreamed of doing. In many cases that equates to more time at the office to actually earn it.
If your ambitions in life, and the things you might regret not doing, are along the lines of going for walks in the park or painting watercolours or owning a dog then not a lot of money is necessary and less time in the office might be the correct thing to do.
But get this, most of us have dreams that actually require some funds to achieve. And barring bank robbery or benefit fraud that means that somewhere along the line more hours in the office are essential.
Right now the only thing that is stopping me from doing all the things I'd like to do is lack of funds and if my employer offered me more money in return for more hours in the office then I'd bite their arm off.
Some dreams have to be paid for unfortunately.
