Having a week off to do some decorating, just a lick of paint to brighten up living room.

Yesterday I started on the ceiling (artex), got a good way down one side and decided to have a break, noticed paint peeling away from the ceiling in the small alcove I have here. As the evening progressed, more and more paint was peeling away. I made a few phonecalls and the general gist that I got was that the artex wasn't sealed when house was built (10ish years old, been here since new build, ceilings never been painted before).

Went to B&Q this morn and was told the same thing, bought some sugar soap and PVA adhesive.

Returned home and made a start by peeling worst of paint off, made a sugar soap solution to wash rest of paint off. As I started washing the artex was actually being washed off down to a ceiling board!! Decided to give up before I did anymore damage. On a section of unpainted ceiling I used PVA solution (PVA diluted 1 part to 5 parts water) to try seal artex, as I brushed this on the artex again was beginning to smooth out!

Am I doing something really stupid or is my ceiling st?

Any help would be appreciated!

Get the ceiling checked for asbestos.

Then rip it down.

Call in a spread.

He will tack it.

Then he will spread it.

Then you mist coat it and so on.

A bit over the top ripping the existing plasterboard down if there is nothing wrong with it ,other than that I agree

No need to pull the ceiling. As mentioned the artex may contain asbestos.

Get a spread in to either skim over the artex or overboard and skim.

It's going to look a bit of a mess now, if you try and patch it up!

I would suggest that if the artex is coming of that easy, you take the rest off and then skim coat the lot.

As for asbestos content, if it's only 10 years old, then nothing to worry about.

First mistake!!
Weeks off should be spent in a hot sunny country.

Take down the entire ceiling (plus a couple of supporting walls). Wait 18 months to make sure that you have got at least one child under the age of one and then call DIY SOS. wink

There's several ways fo removign the artex.

Using a shotgun is effective but tends to upset the neighbours. Do not use this one if you're a Brazilian electrician It's messy but a dry mess. biggrin

This time of year, when there's lots of fireworks going off locally, set off some of your own. Tape them to the ceiling. As with using a shotgun its messy but a dry mess. There's a risk of fire but its safer than the shotgun approach if you've got nosy neighbours or you're a sparks.

Scrubbing brush and water, just wash it smooth. It's very messy and its a wet mess.

Go on holiday whilst a plasterer skims it for you. Make sure he doesn't get paid until its all tidy.

Thanks for all the advice!

Asbestos yikes fortunatly house is only 10yrs old so thanks gtr-gaz, my mind and lungs are at rest now smile

Thanks Fatrat, it is also my eldests 11th birthday tomorrow so though another reason to have time off I feel she's a bit too old for DIY SOS hehe

Spikeyhead, Fab ideas thumbup, however I feel SWMBO may have something to say about it hehe

I just can't understand why artex is so crap, my dad remembers having to use industrial strength powertools to try and remove it before!

If it were i...i'd spend the time getting the artex off and getting a decorator (or yourself)to redo the artex, loads cheaper than a spread. Have ago yourself...easy as fookyes

Tbh I'd prefer the ceiling to be skimmed smooth, seems easy enough with the crap I have on my ceiling atm! Perhaps it's time to roll up my sleeves and get dirty....oo-errr!!!

Nice springy and thin scraper and gently work your way across the ceiling to get rid of the crappy artex. Will not take as long as you think. Then roll on a watery solution of PVA and leave to dry. Then paint away. Matt is the way to go.

The artex is falling off part of my ceiling - I noticed when I decorated downstairs last year. After abit of investigation it turns out it isn't actually artex on the ceiling, it's plaster, and I don't think it's very good stuff.

My solution was to scrape off the loose stuff, buy some pre-mixed artex or plaster in a pot, seal the ceiling first with some diluted normal emulsion, wait for it to dry, and then using a little spreader put the artex or plaster mix on in a similar pattern to the rest of the artex.

This has worked and hasn't fallen off, but i was surprised how much of the original came off - you can see huge air bubbles in it which I assume is why it's falling off.
