as title suggest - just had Sky TV installed (i was a sky virgin, had held out for many years!)

excellent service, excellent speed - i ordered it on Friday!

can't fault the service.

however - in my guide there is no channel 4 or 5 listed. Is that normal? It'll upset wifey if there is no Hollyoaks!

Have you inserted your veiwing card yet?

They will not appear while there is no card inserted. Once you receive that and stick it in, they appear in the list as normal.

Some of my channels stopped working.

Really gutting actually, some of the best porn is on those ones.

yeah viewing card is in......but i had to manually initiate it by calling SKY - which i've done, but it can take time.

However i appear to have many other channels, including the other terrestrial channels - which is what threw me - maybe i just need to wait a while.......

I had this when they upgraded us from Sky to sky+ multiroom.

It takes a time for the system to fully update, they say it can take quite a few hours. In our case it was because the installer had had trouble doing the phone back part of the install properly and had forced it through. I corrected his installation cock-up* and then rang the helpdesk and they talked me through it and it was OK the next morning. It's because the info to release your card hasn't come down the satellite signal or something. If you stop sky and just have the free channels you don't get C4 or C5, eg when you've got it working properly, take the viewing card out and you will see that you can see some channels eg Freeview type stuff but for some reason doesn't include C4etc.

  • * because the numpty hadn't set the phone lines up properly, and it needed redoing and a broadband filter putting in place between sky and the socket. The joker had just plugged a temporary line from the back of the sky box to the main socket while he did his installation then buggered off. What he'd done effectively stuffed our broadband too so I redid everything properly that night. Clowns!

I was told when my box was installed a few years back that the channels can take a while to appear. Sure enough they did. Took about a day in all to get then all.

Handset>Services>Telephone numbers>Sky+ gives their number as 08705 800800

The box software probably needs updating and they'll sort it out. Download can take several hours though.
Great system once it's sorted, though be careful when deleting recordings - there's no 'are you sure?' and if you are a bit heavy on the yellow button you may take another recording with it.

[nerd] The other terrestrial channels are no longer scrambled, and so you can pick them up with just the box on its own. Channels 4 and 5 are still scrambled, so you have to wait for all the necessary codes to be sent to the box, which can take up to 4-5 hours. We have a freeview card in a satellite system, and if we ever have to reboot (e.g. after a power cut) it happens. Depending on how frequently the codes are sent through this can vary from 30 minutes to an afternoon, so don't panic yet [/nerd]
