Oblivion GOTY help

I've just started playing oblivion on the PS3, and I skipped the onscreen help on how to cast spells, ~I've read the manual and all it says is square or r1/r2 to cast but all that does is holster or unholster my weapon or swing my weapon.

Does anyone know how to cast a spell as I have already got them in the quick link triangle thing (up left right and down)

hmmmm, I pushed that LOADS, and nothing worked :/

pushed every button and button combo on the controller and nothing worked :/ Im a dark elf, so should be able to use magic, if only destruction magic

Hmm strange, have you got a spell assigned, if you look to the left of the compass is there anything else there other than your current weapon? Looking from left to right you should have health/magika etc..., weapon, spell, compass, from what I remember you have to assign it before you can use it.
