Long time lurker - first time poster but would have hoped it would be under better circumstances.

My grey 04 plate RX-8 (NA04 SWZ) was stolen last night when I was out. I had only bought it a few days ago and only have 3rd party insurance on it so am screwed if its not recovered. It was driven away so I can only assume that the person who I bought it from had a spare key or can the immobiliser in these cars be disabled?

Anyway I'm pretty pissed off right now - the police have been informed (who actually saw it lurking around town - gave chase but it got away) but is there anything else I can be doing? First time a car has been stolen so not too sure of what I can be doing to try and find it (if anything). Like I said if its not recovered then I'm screwed as I put everything into buying that car (dream car - always been a fan of rotarys). Also funny thing is that I was about to take out fully comp insurance 2 days ago but thought I'd try a few more places to try and get it cheaper - yes I am feeling like a huge tt just now so no need to tell me again.

It was stolen in Hamilton (South Lanarkshire).

Any help appreciated.

Forgive my ignorance but isn't insurance usually third party fire and theft?

I know you can get TP only, but... isn't it a requirement that the car is worth less than £4999, otherwise it HAS to be comprehensive?

Sorry about your loss frown

Hi, only got one set - I have a feeling that it was the previous owners (or their mates) who stole the car and the police have been informed about this but other than interviewing them I doubt they can get much out of them.

I'm 99% sure that I'm not covered for theft - the car was bought for less than £4999.

Should have had two sets. Never take a car with one set of keys.

Your insurance will cover you though as its third party, fire and theft.

Might be worth posting this in the Scotland Area Thread as well to get a wider audience. I wish you good luck with the recovery of your car. smile

You've been done over mate. Remember to get both sets of keys next time or at least make sure the previous owner doesn't know where you live!

Unfortunately sounds like you've been scammed. An RX-8 for less than £5K sounds fairly moody anyway, unless it was a very high miler or a repair job, but I guess you know that now.

Do you know the sellers?

Do you know any very hard people?

If yes to both, perhaps they should meet and discuss your refund.

The insurance issue is down to whether you have third party OR third party fire and theft........

These are 2 different types of insurance and obviously if you have the first option i am afraid you wont get a bean.......

Yeah, looking like a setup but the car was a part ex at a local garage a mate owns and he gave it to me for the price he took it as a p/x for so thats the reason it was slightly cheaper - and it was high miles, no FMSH and these cars can be picked up private for £5400 (£400 VED, low 20's MPG and this is the 192) and i got it just under £5000. It needed a bit of work like tyres + brakes so the price wasn't so low to suggest it was a scam.

But yeah the more I think about it the more it seems like one.

Sounds like an entirely realistic price for an RX8 to me.
There are loads advertised around or just over £5000.

A bit of research shows that decent cars start at 7-8k. Below that they are high mileage with little or no history which I think is important on these cars.

"A mate owns.." i'd have a chat to the mate firstly and find out who traded in the car etc and TRY to find out who could have had a link through to steal the car..

You should of had TPFT mate to drive on the UK ROADS

Hope you get it back..

Legal minimum is TP. F&T is optional.

Called winging it?
Could be a sensible choice if you are a very low risk driver, your car isn't worth much and you disagree with the insurance company on the probability of it being burnt out or nicked. Advanced bangernomics, only, I reckon, and if the difference in premiums is more than the car is worth, a no-brainer.

-insurers have up to 7 days to notify MID, OP said that car only bought a few days ago, so the electronic messaging probably hasn't made it through yet... (particularly if the insurance was bought via a broker, as they would need to transmit an EDI message from their system to the insurer & then (provided the message was received/able to be loaded without falling into error - can happen!) would then subsequently send an MID notification message on to the MID).
