king stupid is he? Austria is even more touchy than "Ze Djermans" about this (Hitler was Austrian, and quite a few of their leaders have a 'clouded' past). The laws against any kind of Nazi symbology or support have been vicious for decades; he must have grown up with them.

Nice to see someone with a bit of sense, but it is the age old problem. of taking a sledge hammer to crack a peanut. The guy made a joke which in that country carries a 10 year prison sentance. It is also a crime to say the holocaust never took place over there. So basically the state are being fascists in trying to iradicate any fascist tendencies.We may raise an eyebrow but we have similar issues here, it is a crime to tell a joke that involves blacks, goliwogs have been removed from Jam and certain civil services only employ non whites to make up their quota. Complete lunacy. Racism is not acceptable but telling a joke is hardly racism in the same way as saying Zig Heil in jest is hardly being a Nazi. Socialist Europe at it's best.

Over here a jackass like this would get media coverage, people would be outraged, he'd lose his job, members from the ADL would be on TV explaining that his mentality is warped and disgusting and that would be that. I'd see it on TV, hope that someone cracks him in the head and go on with my life. Meanwhile we have the death penalty and I think that, in many cases, it's a wonderful thing and I support it. But we keep being told that we're barbaric for having it. Meanwhile you see people get convicted of causing the death of a baby who get a suspended sentence, TWOCers who get wrists slapped after leading the cops on a 90mph chase through a city, and some guy loses control of his car, causes an accident, and he ends up in Jail for it. Throwing that guy in Jail won't make society safer. Throwing someone who lets their boyfriend snap their child's spine sure as heck will, throwing a little chav scumbag who drives a stolen car across densely populated areas like he's playing GTA Vice City sure will.

I have seen people do this sort of thing as a joke and while it is not in the least funny I strongly suspect that this is not a right wing redneck but just someone who is a few pence short of a pound. 10 years would be a counterproductive miscarriage of justice but I suppose they can't just let it go. Whether he should be driving trams is another issue.
On a lighter note, did you see the related article about the guy who trained his German Shepherd, Adolf, to give Nazi salutes? He sounds more deserving of a jail sentence,though he didn't get one, but it would be a pity for the dog to be exterminated, don't you think?
