Hi - I've put together some new kit (CPU, MB, HDD, RAM, Graphics) and am trying to set up XP Pro.

It all boots up ok & loads from the CD.
Inspects hardware - all ok & transfers drivers.

When it goes to 'Starting windows' it loads the Windows XP Professional Setup screen and prompts for ENTER, R or F3 to continue, repair or quit.

It then goes no further whatever I type. Has anybody got any ideas?

(I know the keyboard works)

I remember seeing this problem when XP was first released. Is the disk a copy or a really old disk?

May be worth trying with a different build disk.

That was what I was thinking but...

I've taken the HDD into work with me this morning, complete with my XP disk.

It's currently in a completely different PC sat next to me with XP installing as I type. Guess it could still be the DVD drive I have in the one at home not working well though?

I'm planning to build it to XP here, then put the HDD back and let XP do it's "oooh - you have a new computer" trick

I seem to remember having the same issue with my XP build, solved by waiting for the exact moment that message came up and hitting enter.

Check your IDE assignments in the BIOS. If they are not assigned correctly, you will get problematic XP installs. Just been through this with my Dad's PC. FWIW, it was an Intel chipset/Mobo (850E/Rambus IIRC).

Tried putting the XP laden hard drive back into the new PC, but it blue screens when attempting to run windows

I've falshed the bios on the motherboard to the latest & checked that the ide settings are ok, but now have the same problem again with it stalling on the XP setup screen.

I'm currently downloading Linux to rule out any hardware issues, and will also try to get hold of a new XP CD.

I've tried teh waiting & hit enter trick, but still no luck
