I think it's time to try and protect the value of my spare cash by spreading it around a bit. I'm being brave and drip-feeding some into the equity market, but want to convert a fair amount into the yellow stuff for safety.

Anyone used any of the websites like www.bullionvault.com? Are they reputable?

Any advice appreciated. Cheers people

From a safety perspective aren't you better off with National Savings?

Yes, I've used them, no issues and totally safe/secure.

fk that, buy it and let someone else store it for you??????!!

I just sold a pile of it on ebay, but ebay tends to be over-priced for Investment bars. The best and most reliable place, and I've bought from them, is Baird and Co of London: www.goldline.co.uk Some people buy from there and then list the bars on ebay with a small mark-up and heavy postage to make some cash. Baird and Co send the bars to your door via secure mail.

Really? You have personal guarantees over your investment? You have proof that it is a regulated entity and covered by the CS?

Don't mean to be rude but I'd just like to point out that I doubt there is much evidence to support such a bold claim biggrin

Surely one of the reasons to buy gold is it's the thing to have if the system goes tits up and bullioninourvaulttaverymuch.com are suddenly not contactable. So you'd want it in your own safe in nice sized negotiable pieces which are recognised by all and sundry.

Krugerands are probably best.

If you buy Gold Sovereigns, you're not subject to CGT when you sell them, because they are legal tender in the UK. With other forms of gold you are. Sovereigns carry a small premium compared to other fors of gold investment because of this, but if you think you may need to sell a load of them in a hurry they are probably worth considering.

I believe they are exempt from VAT for the same reason. Yet VAT is charged on silver coins. The CGT thing is a bit daft though, considering the coins are changing hands at a value way above the nominal face value.

A bit late to this, but you might want to consider buying some Palladium right now.

Palladium has crashed hard recently, and I have snagged some for my own grubby little mitts. Palladium has become tied to automobile sales as it is used to make Catalytic convertors. Cars are currently selling like 99s in Greenland right now, so demand has crashed and prices have crashed.

As sales pick up over the next year or two, so should Palladium.

Gold is still overpriced IMO, I expect to see it around $550/oz before Spring. Silver I think will bottom out around $7.50-8/oz

For Gold I was buying up US $20 GOld Pieces, generally AU/MS60 Grade common-date Liberty head stuff, coins worth a fraction over spot.

For Silver I buy bags of what's called "Junk Silver" or Circulated 90% Silver US coins minted prior to 1965. Also quite easy to sell on via eBay and get retail prices for, one of the few coins that are, but not sure what the market for US coins is in the UK, probably very small. When you want to move em just roll them up into paper rolls and list them on eBay, you usually can sell them very easily for current market value.
